Chips: 24 | | | Which Holdem Game ****** NEWBIE ALERT *******
OK I'm sure there are hundreds of posts on this subjenct but here goes anyway. It's all a bit frustrating for a new bloke.
I'm just starting to host a holdem game with 3 -8 players.
Which game, and betting structure would be best for a game to last 3-5 hours maximum with 3-5 players (generally)?
I'd appreciate any feedback on how to go about it.
Thanks & cheers

Chips: 1,513 | | | Cash games are definitely the way to go if you know you have a specific ending time. Everybody buys in for X amount of dollars and you play what ever game you want- 5/10 NL, 10/20 Limit, etc. Then shortly before the time is up everybody cashes out. (if your just using money this is even easier, but if you have chips it may take some time to cash out)
Hope this helps. |

Chips: 1,555 | | | Definitely a cash game vs a No-Limit game. Nothing worse for the players who bust out early to have to sit around doing nothing.
At least in cash games you can buy in for more later and stop at any given time. You can play as long as you want and never worry about raising blinds (unless you want to) |

Chips: 2,131 | | Ahh, this smells of the confusion that has been caused by the TV Poker phenomenon. I think that, because only Tournament Texas Hold'em is being broadcast, many newbies begin to think that:
Texas Hold'em = Tournament Poker - They may not even realize what an actual "cash" ("ring") game is, or that, for most of its history, all poker has been played as a "cash" game, not tournament
- They think that 5-Card Draw Poker is what you play for cash, but Texas Hold'em is what you play in tournaments
- They think that a "cash game" = "no-limit, Hollywood-style-bet-my-horse-lose-the-deed-to-the-ranch-wtf-are-table-stakes" poker

Hope this helps. | I agree, go with a cash game. The blinds stay the same for the whole game so everyone can relax and be more social, and it takes a lot of fiddling with blind schedules before you can predict the end time of a tournament with any accuracy.
Just be sure to visit the bank and bring a wad of smaller bills to make cashing out easier if you are hosting. I did not do this the first time I hosted, and everyone came in with $20 bills they got from the bank machine...kinda tough to make change when everyone has twenties.
