We usually only pay three if it is only one table, so 11 is the max we have ever had at one table. Sometimes we will pay 4 if the buy in is higher. Last paid place always gets the buy in back.
We sometimes will even give the first guy out half the buy in back. That sometimes leads to all-in-fests with a few of the guys in the group!

We tend to play a low buy-in, friendly game. Therefore, we generaly pay out top three, with third getting thier buy-in back. Rough breakdown would be 50/30/20; however, we have never had less than six players in a cash game, so I have never had to give it much thought.

I agree with this. In a friendly game I think 3rd should get their money back with 8-12 people. With 6 or 7 we usually give 3rd 1/2 their buyin back. It's a great combination at getting something out of your playing and also shame in still losing
asked because last 8 player game I played we only paid 2.
This is not the norm as far as I am concerned. Even though I won, I would rather have paid out 3 as a standard (w/ 3rd getting full or 1/2 buy in back). Probably like 7 player to pay 1/2 buyin to 3rd and 6 just 2 spots, and 5, just one.. though if it was just 5 or less I would rather play cash/ring I think.
10 -20 I would do 50/30/20.
Hadn't really thought about third getting only half their buy-in back, but it makes sense. I agree it would still be something of a win, but also some incentive to learn and do better.
