Our group must be rather strict compared to the rest of you. Second place gets their buy in back and first takes the rest.
I don't think it's strict, it's just different. To me it just depends on why you're playing. In an average 10 person tournament when it's down to 2 people I really don't care who wins and frankly think that the top 2 should just be happy with their finish & make a deal so everyone can get on with another tournament. I always fight (and lose) with my group because I think 1st & 2nd should pay out close to the same amount (which will lead to more deals) and that we should pay out 1 more place than the normal 3 for 1-10, 4 for 11-20, 5 for 21-30 or less.
It's a home poker game that started as a quarter poker dealer call with people buying in for $10. We play 1/2 with a kill pot now and 0.25/0.50 NL among other games now, but I still consider it to be for fun and would rather pay out more spots with less of a spread.
I don't really like to pay out 3 places unless there's 9 or 10 people.
Stank always likes to make the 3rd place "kiss your sister" prize where you get your buy-in back. I'd rather have two nice prizes.
