Re: Good Tourny for Starter?
This could be a nice long tourney (hoping that is what you are looking for). I'm assuming you are starting at 5/10. I would drop the 10 chip and the 50 chip. I would add a 500 chip for coloring up. Do you have a blind schedule you are planning on following. One rule of thumb we use is that you really only want 3 colors on the table at a time. When you chip up one color, and new color comes into play. It helps with the newer players (that they don't have to keep track of a bunch of colors)...

Re: Good Tourny for Starter?
CT Chip calculator:
Poker Chips and Poker Chip Advice - ChipTalk.net - ChipTalk Poker Chip Breakdown Calculator
Result for your setup is (per player)
15 x $5
17 x $25
15 x $100
add
45 x $25
75 x $100
60 x $500 for color-ups
This is a starting point, and you can adjust where needed. I second losing the $10 and $50 chips. Too confusing and too many colors in play at one time. You may also consider going with two tables, and making one table when you get down to 9-10 players.
The game I play in has 12-18 people usually, and we have never needed 3 tables.

Re: Good Tourny for Starter?
One of the games I play in uses dice chips:
$1-white
$5-red (OK so far . . . )
$10-blue
$25-black
$50-green
It works, but I'm trying to convince them of the errors of their ways.
L
PS: For the OP, standard colors are
Everywhere but California:
White/Blue $1
Red $5
Green $25
Black $100
Purple $500
California:
Blue $1
Yellow $5
Black $20
Purple $25
White $100
High and low denominations tend to be variable. Standard colors aren't absolutely necessary, but they avoid confusion which is always a good thing.
Having denomination that increase by 4x or 5x tends to be the most efficient - you don't need $10 and $50 chips most of the time.
