Advice for Home Game Tourney
Hi everyone,
I just purchased some new Nile club poker chips (I made a custom set):
the demoninations i have are 25, 50, 100, 500, 1000.
I host a 7-9 person tournament at my home game and would like your input as to the starting stack size, and blind levels/time intervals.
I would like the blinds to start at 25/50 and increase so forth ....
Would 6,000 chips be good to start (20 x 25, 15 x 50, 10 x 100, 4 x 500, and 2 x 1000)? Or would you recommend something else?
Thanks, Rich

Re: Advice for Home Game Tourney
You don't need $50 when you have $25 chips. The general rule of thumb is that you want a 4x or 5x jump between denoms (with 500-1000 being the exception) so stick with 25-100-500-1000.
Another general rule is that you want the starting stacks equal to 100BB so if you start at 25/50, you want to start with a stack of T5000 or more. I've done T7500 tournaments in the past and found it to be a good stack that if you get caught in a big pot early on, you'll still have a decent stack to play with.
here's the schedule we followed, all levels 20 min. We also did rebuys and full stack add-ons for the first hour.
T7500
12x$25
12x$100
6x$500
3x$1000
25/50
50/100
75/150
100/200
150/300
200/400 (remove 25 chips)
300/600
400/800
500/1000
700/1400
1000/2000 (remove 100 chips)
1500/3000
2000/4000
2500/5000
3000/6000
etc.

I run a 10k starting stack either 8/8/6/6 or 12/12/7/5. I don't use 50s though. 25/100/500/1000. Blinds start at 25/50 and go up every 15 minutes.

Re: Advice for Home Game Tourney
thanks for the reply's, they were helpful. I'm going to start with 7500 I think, i know what you mean about the being able to take a few hits and still have some room to play. but since i ordered the 50's on the set, i wanted to use them. wouldnt adding them in just make more chips to play with and not really affect anything else? like this for example:
16 x 25, 14 x 50, 14 x 100, 4 x 500, 3 x 1000 = 7500
I realize that the 50 wouldnt be needed, but would this hurt/affect the structure you guys think? to me it seems like youd just be playing with more chips, some of the people at my games prefer to have a larger sized stack.

Using the 50 will not have a negative affect on the tourney. It's like you figured, just more chips to play with. Just don't bother coloring up until the tourney reaches 100 increments, then you can get rid of the 25's and 50's. If you have newbies playing, the 50 may actually help as I've seen some people playing around with the 25's... grabbing ONE 50 is easy on the math impaired.

This is the reason why I use 50¢ chips in my .25/.50 cash games.
Good Luck. And give us some feedback and pics on those Nile Club chips!

Great, thanks. Ya some of them are slightly newbish lol and I think it's more of a looks thing. Some of them are just more comfortable playing with a bigger sized stack, a psychological thing i guess, to me it doesn't matter.
The chips should arrive in a few days and i'll post some pics. I've never seen ceramic chips before in person so I'm excited to see how they will be.
