Thoughts on starting chips??

I am having the monthly poker game at my house this weekend, and I plan on 15 players MAX. I cannot decide on what would be best as far as starting stacks of chips. I am doing a t10,000 (old wsop stacks). Which do you think is better.

12 x $25 ($300 in chips)
12 x $100 ($1200 in chips)
7 x $500 ($3500 in chips)
5 x $1000 ($5000 in chips)
___________
36 starting chips totaling 10,000

OR

8 x $25 ($200 in chips)
8 x $100 ($800 in chips)
2 x $500 ($1000 in chips)
3 x $1000 ($3000 in chips)
1 x $5000 ($5000 in chips)
_______________________
22 starting chips totalling 10,000

Thanks,
Chris.

Re: Thoughts on starting chips??

Personally, I only like having 3 colors in at once (if I have the chips to do it), so I would go with either the first option or an even more simple one with more smaller denom chips. Get rid of the 1000s and get more 500s...

No contest - 12/12/7/5. But I like 8/13/7/5 even better.

Re: Thoughts on starting chips??

i do
8/25
8/100
8/500
5/1000
color up, lose the 25's early and then bring in the chocolates
our games only run 4-5 hrs so the blinds go up fast and we allow 1 rebuy in the first hour.
the heads up is usually 500's, 1000's and 5000's. i try to color up and keep it tighter toward the end. it seems to work for us and the game usully ends at 11.

Re: Thoughts on starting chips??

How many chips do you have? I do 16(25) 16(100) 6(500) for T5000, 16(25) 16(100) 4(500) 3(2000) for T10000... both structures work well and everyone has lots of chips to play with.

Re: Thoughts on starting chips??

The 2005 WSOP main event had this distribution:
12 x $25
7 x $100
2 x $500
3 x $1000
1 x $5000

Pretty much the same as option 2.

Re: Thoughts on starting chips??

Use the first one or you will barely have any chips on the table. If you get to heads up would you rather have 150xT1000, or 75xT1000 and 15xT5000 in play? Personally I would rather play with more chips on the table.

I always wonder why they sport such a distribution at the WSOP.
Maybe it works good if you have running 50+ Tables, but for a one or two table game, IMHO this would be total nonsense.
For my T10,000 games i use starting stacks of 16x25; 16x100 and 16x500. It works very well, since the loose guys have enough chips to distribute to the others and the starting stacks look very nice and the people can easily stack their chips in a clearly arranged pattern, since there are only 3 denoms in play.
Later in the game, i give out rebuys in 2000 chips. That works very well.

Remember---->Lots o' chips mean lots o' fun

Re: Thoughts on starting chips??

Lots of ways to do it.

If you have lots of chips:
12/17/6/5 (40 chips) I do this on my monthly tourneys for 20-25 people

The most efficient:
8/8/6/6 (28 chips) I do this when we have a big tourney - 50+ players

In between:
12/12/5/6 (35 chips)
