Anyone ever run a heads-up tourney ?

I was just thinking about another structure. Has anyone ever tried a heads-up tourney with your regular group ? How did you do it ? What was it like ?

Re: Anyone ever run a heads-up tourney ?

I've run a heads up tournament before with just under 32 people in a straight knock out structure, with a few byes in the first round.

Unfortunately this was squeezed into a team tournament which had a few tournaments, so we were pretty limited with time, they're always good fun though.

Re: Anyone ever run a heads-up tourney ?

I ran a heads-up tournament as part of my bar league last season. I used it as a last-chance qualifier into the tournament of champions the following week, and it served the purpose, and was lots of fun. The only complaint I received, people got a little impatient while waiting for their first match. I think we had like 20 or so players, so there were only a few first round matches, and lots of byes. I'll be having another heads-up tournament in August for the same purpose again this season, and I hope we fill up to 32 this time!

Re: Anyone ever run a heads-up tourney ?

The only catch with a heads up, is having enough space to fit everyone in the first round.

Best of luck! Let us know how it works out.

Re: Anyone ever run a heads-up tourney ?

Single elimination, double elimination ? Seeded players ? What kind of starting stack ? rounds, blinds. Just looking for ideas. thanks, frank

Yes, I can see how space would be a problem.

Re: Anyone ever run a heads-up tourney ?

Um single knockout - just a straight 32/16/8/4/2 structure

I think a good heads up structure would be something like a 5,000 starting stack.

20 min blinds

25/50
50/100
75/150
100/200
150/300
200/400

W/ regards to things such as the actual draw. I just use Tournament Director, but I would always encourage a random draw of some kind.

Re: Anyone ever run a heads-up tourney ?

I'm planning a headups tournament this summer for only 16 guys but it will be single elimination. We are hoping to have 8 guys play at a time and a separate, low limit cash game going on for the other 8. That way guys can buy in from the heads up as their matches are finished.

Re: Anyone ever run a heads-up tourney ?

I play in a double knockout every year where you have a set period of time to play your match, say one week. You must contact your opponent and arrange where to play. After the match you call the organizer and tell him who won. Then the second round matches go and so on until the finals which are held at the organizers house with side games going on with all the players who were eliminated.

It's cool because you get a live game in once a week or so in your spare time.

Here is the double knockout bracket:

Bristol Street 2007 Heads-up Championship

Re: Anyone ever run a heads-up tourney ?

This is how we did it at the Texas Meetup a few weeks ago...Ranman did a great job running it and it went really well...here's a link to his thread describing the details.

I think it went very smoothly (other than coming in 2nd that is... )

That's a great idea...solves a lot of the problems with trying to get people together for a game.
