Hi guys.
I am looking at playing a 6-8 man poker tournament weekly at my house.
As i live in australia i am looking at buying the chips from the USA but not sure how many i will need.
Now how it will be played is a SNG Buying at what ever amount we set.
Blinds starting : 25/50 and double up from there.
So i will need chips: Green (25) Black (100) Purple (500) maybe some Yellow (5000).
I am wondering how many chips would i need to buy to play with only those chip colors comfortably remembering we will color up later in the blinds.
Jumping from 500 to 5000 value chips is a big jump. Some 1000 point chips in there somewhere wouldn't be a bad idea.
I think he meant the chips add up to 5k not the next chip value is 5k. its a good starting structure. for one table i would like to see more chips on the table i would do
200 x 25
200 x 100
100 x 500
then u could distribute 20 x 25 20 x 100 and 5 x 500 for t5000. then if your game grows u could add some 1000's later (do you really ever want less than 100 x 500 chips in play?) and reduce the starting stacks for the same structure.
If money is a factor but you like some of the pricier chips, on tilt's recommendation of 300 nicer chips is excellent. Otherwise you'll just end up upgrading later. Unless you're expecting more than 10 players regularly, you'll be much better off with 300 chips you prefer than 500 you like less.
Also, if you happen to get more than 8 players you can easily shrink the stacks a little:
8x25
8x100
8x500 or 6x500, 1x1000
Up to 12 players or a few more or less if you're willing to start with less $ or have less room for colour-ups. I managed to put together a 200 chip travel set which can do T2500 for up to 9 players with most colour-ups (but no rebuys) - 300 chips is plenty to work with for 8-10.
The most typical are 12/12/7 or 12/12/3/2 or 8/8/6/1/ or 8/8/4/2. However, after lots of experimentation we use 8 / 13 / 3 / 2 because it gives everybody lots of $100s to play with during the first rounds.
Don't make the mistake of buying and using too many $25 chips. This is a waste of money since they are obsolete very early on the tourney, and you have large useless stacks sitting on the table. If you buy fewer $25s and more of the larger chips, you'll get much more "bank" for your buck and/or can buy fewer chips.
You can easily hold this tourney (even with some rebuys or a couple of extra players) with a 300 chip set. I bought a nice travel set of Paulson chips with these quantities. I originally bought 300 but then purchased a few more because that's what would fit in the case.
84 x $25
150 x $100
54 x $500
36 x $1000
324 total in that case.
We can handle 10 players.
For your tourney and a max of 300 chips, I would buy 80/140/50/30.
I couldn't agree more with tomb1's comments about not buying too many 25's. I also have learnt from experience that you do not want to start with more than 12 of the lowest denom in these sorts of situations. I used to start with a stack of 20 but all it does is slow down the game (as everyone tries to offload them or get an even number before colour up). The colour up also goes slower the more you have.
8 x 25 will work fine too, but you will find from time to time people may need to make change to post blinds/antes. This can still happen with starting stacks of 12, but very infrequently.
