From what I've seen, it's approx 10% of the field.

I think every 100 people is 1 table (10 people or 10%).

Smaller events the top 3 are the ones who usually finish in the money.

Most tournament structures are the top 10%

I've seen a few where its a 20% breakdown(Pokerstars.com does this on a few tournaments).

Generally, most paid the top 10% but I have seen it anywhere from 1% to 20%. Personally I like 10% for MTT and the top 3 for 10 player SNG.

Highest I have seen is 25%. Bellagio pays out the top 100 players when there is 400 or more players in a 5k or more event. Generally 100-51 gets like 1.5 times the buy in and the rest get better money.
