| Alternates: basics and guidelines? Greetings. I think I've come up with a way to have more players be able to play in a tournament that has limited seating. Use alternates! (not original, I know, but it's an idea I've decided I could use if needed) I was just wondering what kind of guidelines you would use for alternates entering a tournament? I was thinking a little about something like this:
(Keep in mind, this is all in the off-chance that a ton of people show up, but I like to be prepared for everything!)
Okay, say I can seat 32 players and 50-60 register. I'd seat the first 32 at four tables of eight. The alternates would receive a number and would go in as people bust out in the order they arrived in. At what point do I not put alternates in? I'm thinking there would be a one-hour limit on the alternates getting in. What happens if everyone doesn't get in within an hour? I'm talking about a free bar tournament right now, but I suppose the advice could also be good for a regular tournament with a buy-in also.
The whole reason I'm even considering this type of thing, is that with the chips I'm bringing to the tournaments at the bar, I only have enough of the smaller chips to seat 50, and by the time alternates get in (with just higher chips), someone could make change easily. Just a thought, and I suppose could also be done on a much smaller scale (one table with 11-15 players?).
Anything I miss, or any ideas or suggestions about an alternate system? I've never had alternates or run a tournament with them, but I'd like to be prepared. Thanks!
