Chips: 362 | | | Antes I still can't decide if should use antes or not. After watching Phil Hellmuth's tournament structures DVD, antes play a big role in playing style. But our game isn't very accustomed to using antes.
Do you guys use antes? Why or why not? |

Basically, having antes gets an extra 1 to 1.5 BB in the pot to fight over, which forces you to play a little looser. This can speed things up, especially late in a tournament. At a 10 player table, the ante is typically 1/10 to 1/8 of the BB. At a 6-8 player table, maybe 1/8 to 1/5 of the BB.
In stud games/tourneys, you need an ante... and a bring-in... |

It's tough to keep track of if people aren't used to it, and if you run a multi-table tourney, it's even harder. |

The dealer should collect the antes in the middle, counting them, and making sure there are the right number before dealing. Then, while dealing, the dealer can mention that blinds should be posted.
I played at a multi-table home tourney a couple of weeks ago at 4ceps place. It went pretty smoothly, but I guess everyone there had done it before. In any case, you get used to it pretty quickly. And if there's one ante short, it's usually the person who won the previous hand who's been stacking his/her chips that forgot to put the ante in... |

If you have good players, longer rounds (min. 30mins), then I think they work better. With 20 mins rounds, I just don't really see the point of antes as enough pressure is already being applied by the escalating blinds.
That being said, I play in tournies that do and don't use them without any problems. |

I ususally start antes after all add-ons/rebuys are over... The only problem I have with antes is that they screw with coloring up. I guess its not a problem if you enjoy a ton of chips on the table - which i do

I've barely been able to get them away from using the small blind/big blind buttons
We've had some new players join of late that have helped step up the game, which has been really helpful. Maybe I'll shoot for antes in a couple of months. It would be nice keep some of them from sitting on their chips. |

seriously, i think a big part of being a home game host is getting your players to the point where they're doing things to help keep the game moving all the time. in the beginning, they don't remember the blinds, but you help them learn it. same thing with acting out of turn, paying attention to when the action's on them, et cetera. in that regard, it's not so bad to introduce new things that you consider important... they'll learn them if you work on it.
