Hello everyone. I am currently setting up a 64 person heads up, no limit hold em tournament.
I was wondering if anyone here had any good ideas on the structure we should use?
We are trying to make this a deep-stack event to maximize the amount of "poker" being played.
1) Starting Stack: ~ 200-300 BB (T20000-T30000)
2) Level Length: 20 Min
3) Buy in: $30 (prize pool) + $5 (championship day party)
4) Self dealt vs. players not currently in game dealing?
5) Bracelet/trophy vs. keep all money in prize pool?
6) Payout structure: 1st/2nd/3rd & 4th same amount, more places? have consolation matches for places 3 +?

Any comments/suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
With that stack/blind structure this could last 18 hrs +
With 6 rounds and no forced play for an hour or more.
The tourney will only progress as fast as the slowest match in each round allows

i would shorten up your starting stacks to 5000 for the first 4 rounds. final two rounds you can double them to 10000. (that is if you are planning single elimination) If this is double elimination, losers bracket needs an even smaller starting stack, say 3000 or so. just my opinion. I would have 100% payback. does anyone actually wear those braclets?
I have to admint, I did not really look at the specs before posting. It was roughly thrown together. One of the organizers insisted on a deep stack format. Looking at it agian I see that each match will take too long. We will be having multiple sites playing multiple games at a time, in order to keep things moving along.
i would say it depends on the level of progression on your blinds. 100xbb would be ok, maybe make the levels 15 minutes instead of 20. blinds starting at 25/50 use a T5000. We have had heads up tournaments before, but not with that many people. We had 10 so I set up a bracket for double elimination so you could win your way back in. I had 3 games going at 1 time so the other 4 players could help with dealing or whatever. We started with a T5000 until the championship. It was T10000. Payouts were 1st-65% 2nd-35%
Over the past 2 months, I have been competing in a double elimination heads up tournament and we're still not down to the finals. This sounds worse than it is. Most of this is due to scheduling problems between the players. We are using deep stacks (133 BB) and 15 minute levels. We only have 12 entrants and that gives byes to some opponents.
It seems like you want to get this done in one day so here are a few of my suggestions: Self dealing is fine. I grab the red deck, you grab the blue one and let's get started. Don't be afraid to go with 15 min. levels. Playing HU with 2 decks will give TONS of hands to play per level. With 15 min. levels you could add a 75/150 and a 150/300 level to smooth things out. You would complete the 200/400 level in 90 min this way. The way you have it planned in post #8, you would complete 200/400 in 100 min. I think players will appreciate the smoother schedule more than the longer intervals.
From my experience you should complete most games at the 400/800 level with 120 or more BB regardless of blind schedule. With 80-100 BB most should be over at 300/600. I really like mixing up the starting stacks from 80 to 120 BB from round 4 to 5.
I would keep it a T5,000 for all rounds. It would be a lot more convienant and doesn't make that much of a diference in play. The last round maybe could be a T10000, or you can do a best of 3 (T5000).

Blind Schedule: Length (Min): Small Blind: Big Blind: 25 min 25 / 50 25 min 50 / 100 25 min 100 / 200 25 min 200 / 400 25 min 300 / 600 25 min 400 / 800
Capped 500 1000
The blind progression looks good, but 25 minutes is a bit long. I think you should do 15 minute levels.

Finish: Payout: %: First $860.00 45 %
Second $560.00 30 %
Third $300.00 15 %
Fourth $200.00 10 %
4 spots is a little short for 64 players IMO. I would recommend paying out 8 places (one more round).
