Evening out chips for EOY championship

During last year I ran a tournamnet for 10 months (we started late), with a rake from each buy-in/rebuy/add-on being added to a EOY pot.

The time has come to set up the EOY game, and the points tallies are not as even as I'd hoped. The original goal was to have your starting chips be 10x your points, but our current standings are:

1st - 275pts
2nd - 230pts
3rd - 100pts
4th - 85pts
5th - 77pts
and down from there...

So if I stick with the original 10x plan, the leader will have almost 3x the number of chips of the rest of the field. It seems the playoof will really only be between 1st & 2nd, which doesn't make for a fun game for everyone else.

Any ideas on evening out the stacks whilst maintaining some reward for those who played well through the year?

I had thought of something like 1000 + 3x points, which makes for the following totals:
1825
1690
1300
1255
1230 (rounded down)

This seems to minimise the margins whilst giving some value to the points.

Hopefully this year's league will provide some closer points tallies as we get more regulars on board.

Re: Evening out chips for EOY championship

How about basing it not on points, but on position in the EOY standings? Then start with (for example)
1st: 2000
2nd: 1700
3rd: 1500
4th: 1300
5th: 1200
6th: 1100
7th-rest of field: 1000

Seems to give an appreciably bigger advantage to the winner.
Also, it gives more meaning to fighting for a position in the standings, as finishing one place higher gets a bigger reward. With this structure, the leader will have a noticeable 'big stack' to start.

It seems to me that it would be unfair if you changed the system after it had been announced (I am assuming it had been announced)...

Either way, it is not bad if 1st and 2nd have an edge, after all, the monies raked from the prior events in essence belongs to them.

On a side note, you may want to change it moving forward.

The Bike points' play offs are usually T100 + T(Pts. x 5)

Re: Evening out chips for EOY championship

Thanks for the input. My orighinal comment at the start of the season was only that the starting stacks for the EOY Champoinship would be based on points. I didn't go into specific detail.

Whilst I really like your suggestion Richard, tmpa2001 brings up a good point about not changing something after it's announced. As such, I think I'll have to go with a starting base plus points x multiplier formula for the current season. I'm seriously considering your solution for the coming season.

Oh, and I'm first Hosting and attending every event helps
