20 Person Tournament - Payout help

Hello all.

Let me first say this is a fantastic forum. Awesome advice & info here.

I have been doing tournaments at my house for about a year now, with close friends. The biggest agem I have had to date was 16. Now I have 20 people for a game this Friday, and wanted to know your opinion on payouts. Top 4? Top 5? What are the general guideline you all use to determine how many?

Thanks again!!

p.s. Faux Clays are on order - Thanks for the writeups on these!!

Jesse

Re: 20 Person Tournament - Payout help

20 man tourney, I'd probably go with 5 spots 45%, 22.5%, 15%, 10%, 7.5%.

Or something similar to that.

Here's a different suggestion for 4 spots. http://www.homepokertourney.com/payout.htm

If I paid more than 3 spots with 20 they wouldn't stop bitching.

Re: 20 Person Tournament - Payout help

when we have around 20 for a mid-sized buy in i pay 4 spots. If it is a small buy in like 10 or 20 bucks, i would go with three buy ins. Do you allow re-buys?

The usual 3 spot payout I use is 50% 30% 20%

If you went with 4 spots, I would go 50% 25% 15% 10% and if you have odd amounts you can round up or down.

20 dollar buy in with 20 players

1st - 200
2nd - 100
3rd - 60
4th - 40

if you allow rebuys i would divide them equally as well into this. some players want the rebuys all added onto 1st place, but I dont do that.

Good luck, sounds like a nice tournament is forming. Need 21??

Re: 20 Person Tournament - Payout help

what was your payout for 16 players?

in my games i use the following rule for payouts:

2 to 5 players: 1 spot
6 to 8 players: 2 spots
9 to 14 players: 3 spots
15 to 20 players: 4 spots
for each incremental player up to 10 players: 1 extra spot
ie. 21-30 players: 5 spots
31-40 playes: 6 spots
etc...

so that the final rule for more than 20 players is
payout spots= # of tables + 2

i find using this payout spread to be generous enough to reward just the right number of players and tight enough to give each player a reasonal amount

Re: 20 Person Tournament - Payout help

I'm pretty close to what 4ceps has (and I believe I may have "borrowed" the basis of my payout structure from his setup) but here is my payout structure for up to 30 players:

5 or less players...........winner take all
6 - 9 players................1st place - 67%.... 2nd place - 33%
10 - 14 players.............1st place - 57%.... 2nd place - 28%.......3rd place - 15%
15 - 20 players.............1st place - 51%.....2nd place - 25%.......3rd place - 14%....... 4th place - 10%
21 - 30 players.............1st place - 47%.....2nd place - 23%.......3rd place - 14%........4th place - 9%.........5th place - 7%

Re: 20 Person Tournament - Payout help

I paid top 3 in my 16 person game. Everyone seemed happy with that. The last bigger game I played in had 26, and he paid top 5.

Mine is a $30 buy in, and a one-time rebuy for $30 in the first 3 blinds.

This is definately the help I was looking for. Thanks a lot!!

Jesse

Re: 20 Person Tournament - Payout help

just as an aside

the rebuys should not affect the number of payouts. only the number of players.

the rebuys should be distributed according to your percentage payouts.

and try to pay out more than just a the buy in to the last pay out spot. that is, if you decide to pay out 4 spots for 20 players, don't just award $30 to the 4th place, make that person feel like s/he won something.

Re: 20 Person Tournament - Payout help

I run 20 person tourney once a quarter at my house.

I payout the top 4.

1st = 50%
2nd = 25%
3rd - 15%
4th = 10%

Never any complaints
