difference between re buy and add on?

What is the difference between these two? I have seen a lot of posts that say unlimited rebuys for first 3 levels and one add on at the end of the 3rd. level. What does that mean exactly?

Re: difference between re buy and add on?

A re-buy requires you to be below a certain predetermined level of chips to qualify. An add-on can be done regardless of your chip count.

Re: difference between re buy and add on?

Basically, a re-buy gets you back into the tournament within the alotted time if you go broke (or almost broke in some tourneys).

An add-on gives you extra chips.

I'm probably an exception but I only allow players to add-on chips up to the original starting stack...so a player above the original starting stack would not be allowed to add-on in my game (Also, I only allow 1 rebuy OR 1 add-on but not both).

sounds like a good system, got to try that at our homegame (if we don't play cash game).

imho unlimited rebuys suck for home games. people with deeper pockets will start to play extremely aggressive to get a lot of chips (one way or the other), tight players will almost certainly lose in the end and get annoyed.

Re: difference between re buy and add on?

I don't understand the idea of an add on. Why would you allow everyone to double up their stack before you even start playing? why not just start the game with that much in chips. Like if you have a T500 and you allow an add on before you start, then some people will have $1000 and others will not. This seems silly to me. The rebuy I understand. But you must bust out before you can rebuy. That makes even more sense.

But like I said, I have never done this before so I am using common sense. And that may be my problem. Thanks for the help guys. I will check with my group and see what the consensus will be.

Re: difference between re buy and add on?

It does seem screwy, Greg. I played a bunch of tourneys last November in Las Vegas and some of them actually quoted the buy-in as if the add-on is automatically included. Everybody pretty much takes the add-on anyway so it just becomes the norm.

Re: difference between re buy and add on?

One of the reasons add-ons are not considered part of the original buy-in is because add-on money is normally not part of the prize pool. It is usually used to pay dealers.

An add-on at the end of the rebuy period gives other players a chance to "get even" with the re-buyers . If I play conservatively and lose some chips but don't bust out (and thus get a chance to rebuy), I at least have one chance to get back above the starting amount to stay even.

Re: difference between re buy and add on?

If you build a big chipstack early - and don't need to rebuy or add-on, then you're getting a better return on your money for cashing. The other players have built the prize pool for you.

In our friendly game we used to do a single rebuy, same chips for same money, but only when you busted. We had some players, very short stacked trying to bust, so they could rebuy, when it got down to the end of the rebuy period. Now we've been doing a single add-on, to get another starting stack of chips anytime you want. Basically turning our $20 tourney into a $40 tourney.

Two weeks ago, only one player did not buy the add-on (me) and I wound up finishing 3rd (we play 3 places) so I doubled my money instead of breaking even.

Last week the only non-add-on buyin' guy (not me) took a chop deal when it got to 3 players.
