24 Person Tourney Help!

I was hoping to get some advice on a T10,000 tourney that I have lined up for this year. Here is what I am thinking for the set up:
Starting Stacks:
12 - 25's
12 - 100's
7 - 500's
5 - 1000's

20 minute blinds:
25/50
50/100
75/150
100/200
150/300
200/400
250/500
Color up 25's -10 minute break
300/600
400/800
500/1000
600/1200
800/1600
1000/2000
1200/2400
1500/3000
Color up 100's - 10 minute break
2000/4000
3000/6000
4000/5000
5000/10000

This puts the tourney over 6 hours. My problem is that I have never held a big tourney before, and I want the tourney to be around 5 hours. There will be no rebuys.

Thoughts would be greatly appreciated so I can dial this in! Thanks,

Re: 24 Person Tourney Help!

i'm thinking this will end with 5000/10000 blinds (making it about 6h20m not including breaks)

btw you can colour up after the 1200/2400 level

i think there's a typo: it should be 4000/8000 right?

i personally like the slow progression, but if you have to take away 1h20m, that's about 4 levels you have to omit. that's a lot

one option is to do a t5000, which would make it end at 3k/6k, 5h20m to 5h40m. you can also omit the 250/500, which will save you another 20m.

if you want to stick to t10,000, my opinion is to let it play out as you have structured it. the whole point of doing a t10,000 with 25/50 starting blinds is to have a deepstack tourney. that implies a lot of play for your chips and by default, a long tourney. there's no advantage to a deepstack tourney if you are going to shorten it by increasing the blinds too fast.

but...if you still want a t10,000 within 5h, i would suggest deleting and amalgamating some levels so that you will have net loss of 4 levels:
1. skip the 250/500
2. skip the 400/800
3. combine the 600/1200 & 800/1600 into 700/1400
4. skip the 1200/2400

that would take away 1h20m from your total tourney.

my preference is do the t5000 and leave the structure the way it is

Re: 24 Person Tourney Help!

One way you can potentially speed up play is by instituting ante's at one of the lower levels. You'd be surprised how much time this can trim off of a tournament's timeline. I start with 25 antes at the 200/400 level, then progress to 50, 100, 200, 300, etc with each blind level. As you can tell, this escalates pretty quickly into building larger pots and forcing more play. You may want to only bump the ante every other blind round, but this works for shortening the game and creating more play at pots since there is already 'dead money' in there from the beginning. With 32 players at my game we usually finish in about 5 1/2 to 6 hours. We start with fewer chips, but my blind rounds are twice as long as yours which makes it equal out in most cases.

Hope this helps;
BPT

Re: 24 Person Tourney Help!

Big THANKS to you both, great advice! I'm going to play around with the structure a little bit, and what you two have said and see what I come up with.

Any more advice is welcome.

thanks again,

-smitty
