Chips: 14 | | | How long would this tourney take? Tourney size ranges from 7-10 people. t4000 starting stack, looking to make it last as close to 3.5 hours as possible. No rebuys. Here's what I have lined up so far:
Starting Stacks:
12 green/ 25
7 black/ 100
6 purple/ 500
total: 4000
blinds, 20 minute levels:
25/50
50/100
75/150
100/200
150/300
200/400
300/600
400/800
2 hrs 20 mins would have elapsed as the 400/800 level was entered, which I think is just about right.
The area I'm having trouble is figuring out average stacks at each level. Is there a formula that gives an approximate number that can be expected? If the tourney still has 5 people left as the 400/800 level is entered, the average stack has an M of 10. Any advice would be extremely helpful. |

Since you only have 7-10 people the max amount of chips on the table is 40 000. When the blinds are 1500-3000 or 2000-4000 it'll be over....even with only 2 players left say one with 24000 and one with 16000....that's a fourth of the players stack in the blind. If you have experienced(read:aggressive) players it'll be over long before that. maybe make your next blind 500-1000 then 750-1500 then 1000-2000 and then 1500-3000. That'll be 3 hours 40mins. They should be removed after the 150-300 level. You may consider going from 400-800 to 600-1200 to 1000-2000 to 1500-3000. You can also add 800-1600 in there. You shouldn't have a problem ending much later than that level. |

I have a T4500 that I know runs 2 hours (we use it regularly)
I have a T5000 that I know runs 3 hours (we've used it several times).
Neither of these is exactly what you want, but they can be the basis to meet what you are looking for.
Unfortunately, I won't be able to post the details until tomorrow. |

It will depend on how you guy's play. I do a 10 player 5,000 chips with the blinds that you have(mine are 25 min). Goes around 4 hours. Just add the following
600/800
800/1600 ends around here.
1000/2000
1500/3000
2000/4000 |

sorry to join the discussion so late
it seems that you've got a few replies, but here's my view (which agrees with some and not with others)
my usual guesstimate of when a tourney ends is the level where the big blind is equal to 4% to 6% of the total chips in play (i lean towards 4%). so the level that it ends will depend on the number of players. (oh yeah, the aggressiveness/passiveness of your players will affect this estimate)
so if you get the low end of 7 players, the total chips in play is 4,000 x 7 = 28,000
4% is 1120 (rounded to 1200)
if you get the high end, 10 players, then total chips = 40,000
4% is 1600
so you will need more blind levels at least until 3 levels past the 800/1600 blinds (just in case you have tight players)
once you have your estimated level where it will end, then assign a length for each level so that it will end at 3.5h
as for estimating the number of players at each level, good luck. i haven't been able to even come close to a formula for that one yet.
as for magriel (m) values, i don't use them for estimating end times unless there are antes in the tournament. the 4% estimate works well enough for me for non-ante tourneys.
hope this helps |

Unfortunately, I won't be able to post the details until tomorrow. | The blind progression for both tournies is the same-
25/50
50/100
75/150
100/200
150/300
200/400
300/600
400/800
600/1200
800/1600
1000/2000
1500/3000
2000/4000
2500/5000
3000/6000
4000/8000
For the T4500/2h tourney, the blinds are 10 minutes each.
For the T5000/3h tourney, the blinds are 15 minutes each.
The late rounds are rarely used, but are listed just in case.
We like to keep the same blind progression for all our tournaments and adjust the length of the rounds and the starting stacks to adjust the style and length of play. |

Chips: 858 | | | Re: How long would this tourney take? Addressing your question about average stacks... There is nothing you could use to give you any indication what the average stacks would be at each level, as this is completely dependent on the number of players still left in the tournament. Since you, or anyone else, has no clue how many players will be left at each level there is no way to figure this out.
Average stack is figured by (Starting Stack x # of entries) / # of players left.
Example for 7 players left out of 10 in a T5000
(5000 x 10) / 7
50000 / 7 = 7143 Average Stack
After further thought, I guess you could possibly go through and guesstimate how many people you think will still be in the tournament at a certain level and do the math that way. But I think even this would be a shot in the dark.
Good luck with the tournament!
