Chips: 543 | | | Rebuy Tourney question... I have hosted a rebuy tourney a couple times, it was $30 buy in w/ unlimited rebuys the first hour....well the problem came when the last 15 minutes of the rebuy period became all in fest, w/ some people just doing the "slot machine" style of 'all in....rebuy.....all in....rebuy'.
To remedy this situation I sent an evite out w/ $50 buy in w/ 1 rebuy first hour.....figured this way, the pot would stay the same but it forces people to actually play the cards, not the slot machine. Well I invited a few couples....and they are the ones that have a hard time w/ the increase...
So to compromise, I was thinking keeping it $50 buy in w/ 1 $30 rebuy. Has anyone ever done this and how did it go.....any other suggestions? |

I do this with my tournaments ($25 buy-in with one $25 rebuy if desired) and it works out great. They folks that take an early bad beat or make a bad decision get a chance to keep playing, and you don't get a ton of people going all in at the end of the rebuy period. |

Especially if you are giving them the total original chip stack again. |

My thought was I didn't want an all in fest -- thus, only one rebuy (I have players that come 90 miles to play, I don't want to send them home after 1 bad beat and 20 minutes of play). Also, I wanted the rebuyer to start off a little bit behind the 8-ball, not with the original starting stack, thus the 1500 chips. At the same time, I didn't want to charge full price for 75% of the chips, so I knocked the price for rebuy down to a round $20.
Because our tourneys are smaller buyins ($25), the 10 or so rebuys pumps first place up and extra $100... I didn't want to discourage re-buys, but I didn't want to change it from a game of chance, with the winner being the guy with the biggest bankroll in his pocket. I think it strikes a nice balance. Just about everyone that is eligible takes advantage of the rebuy period.
For the first six tournaments or so, no one that re-bought actually cashed. But then we had a re-buy who won. I would guess that better than 90% of the rebuys finish out of the money, though.

Chips: 2,935 | | | Re: Rebuy Tourney question... When we do a re-buy (and/or add-on) we structure it like this:
$25 Buy-in - $3000 in chips. (We call 500 chips a "bonus")
$20 Rebuy - $2000 in chips.
$20 Add-on - $1500 in chips.
We stop the Re-buy period at the first break, usually after the first 3 blind levels (just before the 200/400 level, we start at 25/50). We allow the add-on to continue as an option so long as you have one chip on the table you can Add-on, but you must bust out to make the re-buy. Obviously at a point in the game the blinds are high enough that the Add-on just defeats itself. Who want's to buy 3 BB's for $20?
As you can see each option is less and less beneficial, therefor it is to your own disadvantage (chip to money ratio) to do the Re-buy or the Add-on)
But we still get about 50% of the players to doing a re-buy and about 25% doing an add on.
On a side note, I've won several tournaments, both at home games and at casinos, and of the 6 or so wins in the last year, not ONCE did I re-buy or add-on and continue on to the win. All wins were done with the original buy-in and no more. It just seems that the cards are running for you, or they are not, and feeding the pot monster extra chips only aggravates it.
Dunno if that's just me, but it seems that the Re-buy and Add-on are almost "suckers bets" in my personal tourney history. |

I think I've only rebought once (and once I went all in on the last hand before rebuys ended with the intention of buying more chips -- rebuy was 1500 chips, I think I had 800 in front of me -- but I sucked out on the river and tripled up...finished 4th).
If you play good poker and don't chase and don't continue a bluff when you are caught with your hand in the cookie jar (or go all in on a draw), you don't need the re-buy/add-on. But I like to offer if for the less-skilled players...to let them play more cards and to pump up the prize pool. And occasioanlly, the rebuy is there to overcome a terrible suckout...
