WSOP Poker 20 man Qualifier

My local group is considering doing a 20 man 600 dollar buy-in WSOP qualifier. The winner has must compett in the WSOP main event .....if he/she does not....the second finisher will compete. The plane ticket should be covered with extra 100 charged to each player. The remaining cash goes into the winner's pocket to help pay for the hotel expenses. Every player competing will have 2 percent of the winner's cash
in the WSOP. The winner will walk away with the remaining 62 percent .

This tournament will be a T10,000. I want the tournament to run over a Saturday and Sunday....approx. 14 to 16 hours.

Any suggestions on starting stacks, blind schedules, and number of total chips needed would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks,
Drake

Re: WSOP Poker 20 man Qualifier

I have thread from last year titled "How long will this tournament last". It's under Home Games -> Tournament Structures.

It was a 2 day, 16 man T10,000 tournament with 45 minute levels and WSOP based blind structure. Check that out, and let me know what other questions you have.

Re: WSOP Poker 20 man Qualifier

You might as well do the WSOP blind schedule since that is what the winner will be playing in. This way they are a little used to the format.

You will need to change the blind lengths or the length of the tournament though. You will need at least 20 blind levels to get the tournament finished, and probably more like 24. So either plan on 2 - 18 hour days @ 1.5 hour blinds (not fun), or change the blind lengths to 30 or 45 minutes. 30 minutes will probably be best considering the time needed for breaks, color ups, and food.

If you have a dedicated dealer at each table and pass only the shuffle I've found this speeds the game up considerably. In fact our tournaments move faster than casino tournaments by far since we don't have to pause in between each hand to wash, shuffle, cut the deck.

Starting stacks for the WSOP are 8 x 25, 8 x 100, 4 x 500, 2 x 1000, 1 x 5000 but this is a litte restrictive because people always need to get change. If you have enough chips I suggest 12, 12, 7, 5. You will need to color up more chips, but it's worth it to make things easier at the table.

Hope this helps.

Re: WSOP Poker 20 man Qualifier

Are you trying to send the best player from the group or the luckiest is my first question?

A good article in the April Card Player magazine on Alan Goehring about blinds, and structures, chip stacks, etc.

I would think that a tournament like this should strive to send the very best player which means it needs to be a long tournament, with big stacks, reasonble blinds, and not some sort of turbo poker where an all in fest takes over because of escalating blind structures or time limits.

In the article, Alan talks about this issue where the best player is better determined by a structure that allows the best players to come to the top.

You can practice the format of the WSOP AFTER you get your best player. Then you all have a better chance at a return on your $600 each investment by sending the best.

Re: WSOP Poker 20 man Qualifier

Of course we would like to send the best person but I think running a tourney similiar to the WSOP main event would make everybody happy.
Running a tourney with 30 minute blinds will hopefully work.

I like the big starting stacks that snuix mentioned to keep from always coloring up. BUT, I'm kind of new running tournys and need to a good idea of how many total chips I need. 240 green, 240 black, 200 Purple, 100 Orange, and 50 ($5000) chips. Would this be enough or to much??

Thanks in Advance,
Drake

Re: WSOP Poker 20 man Qualifier

For 20 people, starting with 8/8/4/2/1, you'd only need:

160 Green T25
200 Black T100
120 Purple T500
100 Orange T1000
20 Grey(?) T5000

Or 40 T5000 chips, if you really felt the need to color up the Orange (not necessary IMO)

If you want to start with 12 Greens and 7 Blacks, change the first two numbers to 240 and 200.

And if you want to stick to the 12/12/7/5/0 you could get away with:
240
240
200
200
0-40

But that still doesn't prevent the need from coloring up. It actually increases it, because having all those greens in play will slow things down eventually.

As for blind lengths, unless you have dealers, I'd recommend 40-45 minutes for this event.

Re: WSOP Poker 20 man Qualifier

T10,000 Deepstacks
20 Players
Starting Stacks:
20 green T25, 15 black T100, 6 purple T500, 5 yellow T1,000
Blinds:
25-50
50-100
75-150
100-200
150-300
200-400
250-500
Remove T25 chips
300-600
400-800
500-1,000
600-1,200
800-1,600
1,000-2,000
1,200-2,400
Remove T100 chips
1,500-3,000
2,000-4,000
2,500-5,000
Remove T500 chips
3,000-6,000
4,000-8,000
5,000-10,000

20 levels @ 40 minutes each = 800 minutes = 13 hours 20 minutes
Adding in time for a 5-minute break after each level would bring the total time to 15 hours. Including a dinner break, it would bring the time to 17 hours over two days. I would play from noon to six o'clock, take a dinner break for an hour, and resume play at seven until you finish a certain level or reach the final table players.

Re: WSOP Poker 20 man Qualifier

Forget the grey and get more yellow/orange.
I doubt you will need to color them up.
We have done something similar to this and used faux clays and everyone loves it with tall stacks of color in the game.

At last year's WSOP main event, the starting stack was:

(12) $25
(7) $100
(4) $500
(2) $1000
(1) $5000

I found this to be a little less than ideal. The number of $25 and $100 chips were OK, but the higher denominations created a lot of change-making even in the second and third levels, as players' stacks got smaller.

My suggestion would be to use (6) $500 and (6) $1000 chips, and eliminate the $5000 chips until you're down to three players or heads-up.
