I was wondering if anyone has ever tried a tourney using only two demonimations with the higher denom only 2x the smaller. I was thinking of doing a desert palms set with $500 and $1000 chips for a tourney where each player would have 40x$500 and 20x$1000 chips. The blinds would start at 500/1000, 1000,1500, etc. Has anyone had any experience w/ this type of setup or have any suggestions/recommendations for or against this type of strucure?
the blinds at 500/1,000 with starting stacks of 40,000 would be a bit high I think. I would probably want closer to 100k but it would not be totally unreasonable. Still, raising 3x the blind and getting re-raised 3x that would force you to stick in nearly 25% of your stack just to call a re-raise in the first level.
I did a 8 man heads up tourney with 2 denoms for 10k with this set up:
20 x $100
16 x $500
With it being a heads up tourney, the blinds started higher so I didn't need lower denoms, but it worked really well and it inspired to cut my regular 10K tourney down to 3 denoms.
Standard 10k Tourney:
30 x $100
6 x $500
4 x $1000
I start the blinds off at 100/100 for level 1. I could easily use the 1st setup and make it a 2 denom game but I don't have enough $500 chips to accommodate a full 10 player tourney.

remove $100s using $1000s and $500s (or only $500s if you don't want $1000s)
