Chips: 807 | | | Tournament Structure for Skillful Play We are having a tournament, which is twice as big as our weekly games, and a much higher buyin. The winner is going to the WSOP (not in the main event). I am trying to come up with a new structure. I got something down but I want to get some other ideas/thoughts. There will be 20 players in the tournament. Everyone will start with 5,000 chips, and the blinds start at 25/50 (100 large blinds). I want the tournament to last about 7-9 hours. I dont want the tournament to come down to allin crapshoot with a lot of players left. I was thinking about having 45 minute levels, with this structure:
25/50
50/100
75/150
100/200
200/400
300/600
500/1000
1000/2000
2000/4000
3000/6000
4000/8000
5000/10000
Do you think this structure allows for alot of skillful play? Any thoughts/comments/ideas? Weve never tried a tournament this long, we usually play laid-back low buyin games that only last about 2 hours so not alot of room for play. |

after 7.5 hours, the blinds are 3k/6k. total chips on the final table 100k. even if it's headsup at that point, it's an allin fest. if it's 3 or 4 handed, it's pure crapshootage.
after 5 hours, it's at 500/1k. at that point, i'd expect you to be at 7-9 handed. with 100 k at the table, the average stack will have m~6.
really...a luckfest needs more than longer levels...i'd suggest shorter levels and a much flatter progression of blinds.
BB only...
50
100
150
200
300
400
500
600
800
1000
1200
1400
1600
1800
2000
3000
4000
at 30 minutes per round, that's 8.5 hours. i'd be surprised if a 4k BB didn't get it done. |

Chips: 807 | | | Re: Tournament Structure for Skillful Play I like your idea jojo, I think Im gonna use that structure, or one very similar, with 30 minute levels. Thanks for the help.
Sandman, we already have all the spots filled, but in case we do it again, heres some info:
Buyin - $150 (Not very high, but for the players in our game, especially trying to get 20, its high).
1st Place gets round trip airfare from Tampa to LV, 3 nights stay at either Harrahs or a similar hotel/casino (were not 100% which hotel/casino we want to go with), plus entry into WSOP Event #17, the $1000 NL Holdem Event, and $400 spend money.
2nd Place gets to go with 1st place to LV and stay in the nice hotel, and have $250 spend money. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
