ky have you hosted any more of these? I may end up with 16 players!! I am a little concerned if only say 12 or 13 show up...I may switch to a round robin format with 2 pool winners then have those 2 playoff in a best of 3 match. What do you think? |

About the round robin format, I think it works well if you have plenty of time to play the games but I personally decided against it because I wanted to complete the entire tournament in less than 6 hours. |

(3 hours for groups of 3, 4 hours for groups of 4, 5 hours for groups of 5) Then add on another 1-2 hours for the finals and it should finish in less than 7 hours. If 14-16 show then I am going back to the double elimination bracket and inserting buys into the bracket.
I will let you know how it all turns out on Sunday! |

I will let you know how it all turns out on Sunday! | That's sound like a great setup. How you will make sure that one group doesn't have too many "good" or too many "bad" players? |

You let fate decide and pull them from a hat. Only fair way.

I have the list just about settled, and for the most part they are gonna be n00bs. All of them have played in the garge before, but not many times. My goal is to just play solid and look for thier mistakes. Hopefully I make it to the cash...I would be happy with second. That'll keep em coming for a while at least! |

Since my HU tourney will be part of the league season (double elimination though), I'm considering scheduling this game after 6 or so league games and then seeding the HU tourney based on the league standings to that point. So in a 8 player tourney, round 1 would be 1st seed (season's current point leader) vs. 8th seed (season's current last place player), 2nd seed vs. 7th seed, and so on. I would definitely use this method if I was doing a round robin format with separate groups. I did use random seeding last year in my double elimination tourney and it worked out fine so I may actually take a poll and ask the players which method they prefer but I only like the idea of random seeding with a round robin format if the entire tourney is open without sorting players into groups. |

Chips: 606 | | | Re: Heads Up Tournament Here is one way to make groups of similar strength (provided players are seeded):
Two groups
A: 1, 4, 5, 8, 9
B: 2, 3, 6, 7, 10
Three groups:
A: 1, 6, 7, 12, 13
B: 2, 5, 8, 11, 14
C: 3, 4, 9, 10, 15
Four groups:
A: 1, 8, 9, 16, 17
B: 2, 7, 10, 15, 18
C: 3, 6, 11, 14, 19
D: 4, 5, 12, 13, 20
n groups
A: 1, 2n, 2n+1, 4n, etc.
B: 2, 2n-1, 2n+2, 4n-1, etc.
C: 3, 2n-2, 2n+3, 4n-2, etc.
...
X: n-2, n+3, 3n-2, 3n+3, etc.
Y: n-1, n+2, 3n-1, 3n+2, etc.
Z: n, n+1, 3n, 3n+1, etc.
If the number of players is not divisible with the number of groups, just distribute the players that are there. The groups will still be relatively well matched.
If more players share the same seed, e.g. two players are both seeded 7-8, then just draw lots (or cards) who will be in spot no 7, and who will be in spot no 8.

Since most of these people are semi-n00bs to poker ( with the exception of 2-3 ) I figure the random draw will be the best bet. The only situation that I am going to try to avoid will be a guy, his brother, and his son all playing in the same group or getting paired together if I run a normal bracket. |

Chips: 1,564 | | | Re: Heads Up Tournament Well the tournament was a partial success....I had numerous phone calls out all week and never heard back from several people....so I figured it would just be the 8 guys who said they would play and me...no big deal just draw for pools and play it out right....wrong. I had 3 others show up just as I was getting ready to hand out cash chips...well we talk it over and do a 16 man bracket with byes. Well that was all fine and good, people were involved in the tourney and a side game was going almost the whole time.
Now it rolls around to 12:30 the guy who is the winner in finals says...yea I gotta go. Now he has a 40 min drive so I am not to upset with him...but what should I do?
Well I say to him....I will give you the second place money-$60. He says okay and leaves and takes one other guy who was out already with him. Then its me and 2 others to figure out the other places...again, what should I do?
Well I say look lets just chop it....they look at each other and say...okay its your garage. We each get $46. So after a $25 buy in [tourney=$20, $5 for cash chips], and a $5 reload I am up $16. Not bad...well we continue the cash game .05/.10 NL and after about 30 min I cash out with the only other player with money....for a whopping grand total of ......
wait for it.....
wait.....
$17.85!! WOO HOO
So I figure I made $23.85 for the night.
Now for next year.....I keep it to eight....commit or come just for the cash game.
