Just a thought.
That's a great idea and I can actually justify having all these decks of cards

Re: Heads Up Tournament

I played my father last night (this heads up setup works great for grudge matches) and he beat me again. I am now 0-3 lifetime against him and he will not let me hear the end of it. He's very difficult to play because I have no idea what 2 cards he's holding (he can limp with a monster and raise with a resanable hand) but I consistently out play him because he sometimes makes the mistake of putting too many of his chips at risk to win small pots...but I've never beat him so what do I know.

It really eats me up that I can "out play him" but still loose. He claims to get these great reads on me, but it sure helps your reads when your catching Aces all night. We actually made it to level 5 (1k/2k) and the match lasted about 70 minutes. I don't expect any games to go this long when I do the tournament because some strange things had to happen to make it this far.

Re: Heads Up Tournament

Ky70, since I read your thread about sitting down with some buddies and giving a heads up tourney a trial run I decided to do the same thing.

Two different nights against two different opponents with 2 different structures.

The first was T1500 with 25/50 Blinds the whole time. We played best 2 out of three, and the busted guy just reloaded and the other guy kept the chips. Well that worked out pretty well because it made for loose play from the first round winner. Also the play was much looser because the two of us were just about hammered. Overall I would have to say that I do not like this structure (This also has nothing to do with the fact that I lost, I just don't like it.).

The second attempt, a non-alcohol related one, went much better. T2500 with 25/50 blinds the whole time, best 2 out of 3. The play was better, much better. And I feel that this will be the structure that I use for my big heads up tourney, only difference being that I will set up a double elimination bracket.

Thanks for your trial run idea! Now I can't wait to get some more guys interested in heads up tournament!!!

Re: Heads Up Tournament

Sounds like you had a blast (especially in game 1) .

With all the deal cutting that can go on in regular tourneys when it gets down 3 or 2 players, it's a nice a switch to have to get all the chips to win. For me It can be mentally draining as I think it's the poker equivalent of two linemen in football going at it all day with no plays off or boxing. I could be reaching a little but it's definitely a big change of pace.

Since I don't want any game to last much longer than 1 hour I'll probably switch the blind levels 4 - 6 to 10 minutes. This way no game will make it (from my experience) past 65 mintues (the end of level 5)
Blinds:
Level.....Minutes.......Small.........Big

1.............15.............$ 100........$ 200
2.............15.............$ 200........$ 400
3.............15.............$ 400........$ 800
4.............10.............$ 600........$ 1200
5.............10.............$ 1000.......$ 2000
6.............10.............$ 2000.......$ 4000

Re: Heads Up Tournament

Shortening those rounds would be a good idea. That might stimulate a little more action in the ealier rounds, knowing that the blinds are going to raise dramatically compared to the length of each round.

There one thing to consider though that 5 min could be 10 hands that are folded, or 3-4 that make it to a show down. That could majorly affect the outcome of the match.

I am going to run another trial this week. I will get some times of actual hands, using 2 separate decks, that are folded preflop, post-flop, on the turn, or taken to showdown.

That info might help in determining round lengths.

**Edit**

Ky I was also wondering about your 2K-4K blind level. Isn't that like 30% of all the chips in play? This would mean that a standard raise would put one or both players all in every hand. I honestly don't see how a game could last any longer than one or two hands at this level.

I will actually run a trial using your exact setup and blind levels to get a better idea of how the whole tournament is going to work as opposed to my setup.

Re: Heads Up Tournament

Cap, I don't expect it to ever make it to level 6...but I may just kill level 6 altogether and let 1k/2k be the last blind level or replace level 6 with 1.5k/3k?

Let me know how your next run goes

Re: Heads Up Tournament

Ky I think 1.5K/3K would be doable as your level 6, but you might be better off just leaving it at the 1K/2K mark. At that level a standard raise is still feasible, by either player with even stacks, and an "All-In" bet still has some teeth with a shorter stacked player.

Re: Heads Up Tournament

I went and did a little digging and found PokerStars Heads Up Tournament Schedule.

Heads Up Poker Stars Tourney

Small/Big/Ante
10/20
15/30
25/50
50/100
75/150
100/200
100/200/25
200/400/25
300/600/50
400/800/50
600/1200/75
1000/2000/100
1500/3000/150
2K/4K/200
3K/6K/300
4K/8K/400
6K/12K/600
10K/20K/1K
15K/30K/1.5K
20K/40K/2K

Hopefully someone lurking on this thread can tell me how the entire tournament works. I am assuming that if you get knocked out you're done, but does the winner get to keep all the chips, i.e. 3000 from the first match, 6000 from the second, etc, etc.

I ask this because under the tournament window it says "Starting chips and Blinds double every round."

SO....if you get to keep your chips does the next level blind start at 15/30, or something higher??????

Thanks for any info!!

***EDIT****

KY70, it might also be beneficial to add in some kind of an ante. Since I think part of the goal of this is to get more experience playing at a final table there is always ante there, and that will also help control the length of individual matches.

****EDIIITTTT******

Yeah well I found this linked to HPT.

ROUND OF......STARTING CHIPS......BLINDS
64.....$20,000......100-200, 150-300, 200-400, 300-600, 400-800, 600-1200

32.....$40,000......200-400, 300-600 400-800, 600-1200, 1000-2000, 1500-3000

16....$80,000.......300-600, 400-800, 600-1200, 1000-2000, 1500-3000, 2k-4k

8.....$160,000.......400-800, 800-1600, 1000-2000, 2K-4K, 3K-6K, 4K-8K

4.....$320,000.......800-1600, 1500-3000, 2K-4K, 4K-8K, 6K-12K, 8K-16K

2......$640,000......2K-4K, 4K-8K, 6K-12K, 10K-20K, 20K-40K, 30K-60K

Its from the show on NBC this year. Looks like you keep the chips, and the blinds "double" or at least increase considerable from round to round!

Might be something to think about for this Heads Up Match! Even though it might start out with 6.....and not....64 players!!!!

Re: Heads Up Tournament

That's good stuff. I don't think moving forward with the chips and doubling the blinds will work with double elimination though.
