But you said, "They cannot see cards that are in the muck. THey can see a hand that is not shown if it does not hit the muck (other dead cards) - once it is in the muck it is dead" According to the portion of Robert Rules I posted above, that statement is not accurate at the showdown.
My point was that there are some rules (mainly this viewing mucked card one) that I do not include in my game. Actually, no home game I've attended has allowed a player to see another player's mucked cards. With that in mind, I don't feel required to do the chip race because that's the way it's "supposed" to be done just as I don't permit players to see mucked cards although the rules say they can.
We are rebels I don't do it because I am stickler for the rules. Well maybe a little. I like to run tournaments like they would be run at the WSOP or at Caesars across the river. I usually include antes in my blind schedules, and race chips off etc.
I was involved in a card room for a couple months and we ran it according to the rules most casinos use. You could ask to see someones hand if it had not gone into the muck, but once it was in the muck the cards were gathered shuffled and dealt - more hands per hour
The race is more fun IMo because it's even more gambling inside of gambling, but in my recent casino tourneys they rounded up. At Binions they raced, but at Mandalay Bay and Luxor they rounded up. It could be because the Binion stourney was 225 or so people (I came in 24th) and the Mandalay Bay was 30 people (2nd) and Luxor was 60 people (? 30th)
