What would happen if you were caught raking a $1-$2 No Limit Hold 'Em home game at a house?

What are ways you might be caught?

    Any protection against it?

Depends on who catches you. If your players catch you, and they weren't aware of a "rake", you will probably get your ass kicked. If the cops catch you, Carnac sees "prison" in your future.
Somebody rats you out to the authorities, then one night during your game you will have a surprise at your door.
Don't do it. If you do it anyway, don't let any of your players leave.

Rumor has it that the reason a few local smaller games have been raided over the years is that a losing player or their spouse claimed that they were cheated. Could it have been cheating? Sure, always possible, be careful who you play with. But could it have been a bad run or just a bad player? Sure. That doesn't help when some idiot loses the rent money and tells his wife that he was cheated. The wife calls the police and then next thing you know, the poker room gets 'a visit'.

Around where I live the District Attorney has prosecuted people (jail) for taking a rake. Typically, they send in an undercover officer to play and then he reports back. Then the raid hits and the host is screwed and the people playing are also hit as well.

How are they going to find out? Like a couple people mentioned...losing players, someone pissed, someone just talking and its overheard.
