I have only played in a couple of cash games since I switched jobs 5 months ago. There are monthly tournaments hosted by non-profit organizations 120 miles from where I live. One of them hosts a $100 50,000 chip deep- stack tournament. I called to inquire about the structure and number of players. I was told the blinds progressed gradually and that the tournament would likely consist of 25 players and run 7 to 8 hours. I decided to go.

    The structure:

    (20 minute blinds)

    25/50
    50/100
    100/200
    150/300
    (Break) Remove 25's
    200/400
    300/600
    400/800
    500/1000
    (Break) Remove 100's
    1K/2K
    1,500/3,000
    2K/4K
    2,500/5,000
    3K/6K
    4K/8K
    (Break) Remove 500's and 1,000's
    5K/10K
    10K/20K
    20K40K
    30K/60K

18 players turned out. Tournament pays out top 4.

We are down to 5 players. (Average chip stack is roughly 4.5BB's) Hero is the short stack with Q,J off-suit on the button and 80K in chips. Blinds are 20K/40K.

SB and the BB post. UTG folds. Cut-off, who is the chip leader, raises 100K on top. Both the SB and BB look like they don't want to commit another 100K to their hand. Hero figures he is probably up against an Ace. Is this as a good a spot as Hero can hope for given the circumstances? Or should Hero fold and hope to get 4th place money of $100 which covers his buy-in?

I understand the M factor, but Hero has had garbage hands, or has faced all-in shoves with weaker holdings than Q,J for the last couple of orbits. (Hero did fold K,10 to two all-ins a few hands earlier.)

Shove and hope for the best. If you fold you'll have to post the SB and have 60K behind. No Bueno.

I am sure I missed some opportunities, and there may be some lessons here. I did shove, and paired my Jack on the flop, but he also flopped the nut flush draw. The turn card gave him the win.

You had TWO big blinds on the button, should have shoved for sure, and should have shoved a while back with K-10. IMHO with less than 10bb, you're in shove mode. Two broadway cards, nice suited connectors, any pair, time to shippity-ship it my friend.

For the record, that blind structure sucks IMHO. It follows a decent path, until it after the second and third break, where it jumps 100% (doubles). Hate that.

    They could have gone:

    500/1000
    700/1400
    1000/2000
    1500/3000

I would not have entered the tournament if I had known beforehand that the blinds doubled in the latter rounds. Surprisingly, not everyone was shipping there stacks with the blinds at 20K/40K as you might expect.
