Pete's room is on/near South Congress in Austin. I have an older business card from pete with [redacted by request] as his phone number. (He recruits in Las Vegas rooms - at least that is where I met him.)

I go out of my way not to play in raked games. I haven't set foot in Pete's game nor any other raked game. My "dance card" is full as it is with 40 games I host and another 50 I play in each year. Why pay the rake when I can get almost all I want from home games?

I am hosting a $1/$1 game Saturday. Dinner at 6:45, cards at 7:15 Garden City chips are scheduled for the game. It is about 45 minutes south of Austin.

I will ask the proprietor next time I play. He's a very nice guy and I'd bet he'd be happy to discuss the details via phone to anybody that would listen.

In the case of the Austin card room, he may have found the right balance. While I'm not a lawyer, and certainly not an expert on the law here, I do focus on the phrase "all monies must be returned to the players", like a home game. If you think about it, the membership fee is really an entry fee into the building and is paying for electricity, AC/heating, supplies, employees wages, and also hopefully includes some security. Once you sit down, all monies are being returned to the players every hand, since there is no tipping either.

I've heard of some places that pull a buck out of every pot to pay a bad beat jackpot, where all the monies get returned to the players...eventually. Perhaps the Austin card room is even more legal than this?

Not serving alcohol avoids a lot of problems, both legally and people wise.

I would also saying operating in plain sight is a good thing too. Having a back alley underground entrance with double secret pass codes (think Rounders scene) tends to scare off the more cautious types increasing the percentage of less desirables, and makes it an easier target to be robbed.

Considering all this, it seems to be a "corporate" home game. If its still open, the Law must think so too, as long as there is no other lascivious activities (drugs, bookies, etc) going on.

I never get down to Austin, so a trip report would be nice to report on the facilities and players.

I'll be going out with the guys on Saturday night, not poker players. Maybe if you're playing late me + another ChipTalk member can drop by?

Sure, that would be great. I can not say how long the game will run - this is not the game with my colorful cast of villains. Some nights we break before midnight and other nights it is 4 am and I am showing folks the door.

I will PM directions and a phone number.

Not always, sometimes it takes a break in the schedule of other cases they are working or someone that decides "this is the day" after watching for a while. Under-covers will have to play in the game a few times to establish that what they advertise is indeed going on and that it is indeed against the law and those things take time.

I know quite a few people who have been involved with the medical marijuana (and now, recreational marijuana) industry up here from the beginning and knew guys who got raided a few times. The feds used to have no rhyme or reason on when the raids would come, sometimes it was after another state tried to push for legalization and would get shutdown, sometimes it's a field office in San Diego that says when the raids would happen up and down the west coast, sometimes it was a local office that had been doing buys for a month or so and then would raid three or four shops to try and get the rest of them closed.

I am not saying that is what is happening with the poker club you all are talking about obviously, but what I am saying is a few months, hell, even a year or so, of being open doesn't mean it's not coming. I think it's absolutely ridiculous that poker rooms are illegal anywhere in this country, and would gladly break that law by playing at an "illegal" card house with out losing a bit of sleep...but I have been in two places that were raided (one a card game at a bar that the owner was raking and had been warned several times, the other a medical marijuana dispensary) and I don't want to repeat that experience if I can. I'm not a pussy, but the feeling of a tactical team coming in geeked on adrenaline and carrying AR-15 rifles while yelling at you is unsettling to say the least. While I never once felt like someone was about to start shooting at any minute, having people with guns standing over you and you can't even move your hands off the table, let alone get up and leave like you would any other day of the week, is not something I ever want to feel again.

I support people who push the boundaries of unjust laws by operating in grey areas, like a poker room finding a way to try to open in a state where it is illegal, but just know that when the police come they come heavy and it's a shitty feeling to lose your freedom, even for a couple of hours.

I have a very long trip report for this card room, I'll post it when I get time. Not too bad for a recent start-up. I was in a really bad mood about things unrelated so I'll have to temper my thoughts and be fair.

@TenPercenter You would enjoy @DrStrange's game. Nice group of folks, plenty of chips to view and great food.

It looks like we have quite a few Texans on this forum. We should get a tourney or meet and greet together. I would be glad to help get it together if there is any interest.

The problem with "Texans" is Texas is 800 miles wide and 650 miles tall. Our fellow chippers could easily be two days drive from my house, here in the middle of nowhere, Texas. It is not like New England with states the size of Texas counties where driving to the next state is an hours drive.

Well I can't figure why you had trouble. I checked my PM and the phone number is right. The phone seems to be working (which isn't a sure thing out here in the sticks.)

We just broke the game down. Sorry to have missed you somehow.

No problem, I did get in contact with Pete. He wasn't running a game, so we went back to the Texas card house. Probably shouldn't have, we both lost about 450 each.

also interested in the trip report - was it well run - what were the players like

They have changed a lot about their fees
a - monthly membership is now $200 - no founder option - was this because that amount is necessary to operate the club (which is what think it is - or did they decide that people will pay this amount)
b - other games such as bridge / gin / spades is offered - have their been any games like this

    thanks for the info

This poker room is about 5mi from my house but I haven't had a chance to play there since June 25th. Pricey monthly fees are a deterrent.
