    Hi,

I’m here to ask for an advice about upgrading my current set of cheap-plastic chips. I’ve been looking around and I fell in love with visual looks of Dunes set.

I tried to do some research here, and found out that there are 2 types of Dunes commemorative:
    1. china clay version
    2. injection-molded plastic version
Clearly first one is supposed to be superior to the other one, but I’ve read that “china clay dunes are long gone”.

Then I found “some” version of them on apachepoekerchips, and it turns out they are happy to ship to EU. Unfortunately they turn out to be very cheap (.19), compared to lets say majestics (.36) or CPS (.55) that are widely recommended here.

Does it mean that those dunes are plastic version, not china clay, even if the description says “The chips are clay and weigh 9.5 grams each.”? If they indeed are, is there still any place where CC version can be bought?

Thanks in advance for any help!
    Piotr

the ones on apache are the plastic injected. your best bet is to keep an eye out on ebay. 2 sets have sold in the last couple of months. not to bad a price either. around 27 cent a chip.

Awesome, thanks for both your answers.
So just to make sure, as far as I understood - I'm supposed to be looking for chips looking like those:

If we're already talking, are there any other china clay chips that stand out and are worth recommending? As I'm looking for a relatively small set, I'm willing to pay up to 1$ for a chip.

I highly recommend jumping onto one of sets I've just posted :) Really, they are the best looking CC chips out there, including the Pharaoh's Club. I am selling these because I've over spent my chip funds and need to replenish them.

thyechal is a great person to deal with. he has a set of cps cash game chips that are great. good breakdown for a .25/.50 up to 1/2 cash games. if you're loking for a tourney set then the majestics are nice also. it depends on what you are looking for.

but as for what you posted, yes those are the dunes you are looking for. all circular labels. but i do not think they made a .25 chip. ( i may be wrong but i have never seen one) the edge spots on the one you posted look like the plastic version.

ooops. sorrry the cps cash set is only a 1/2 setup. sorrry. thought he had quarters in there.

youmcould always order some quarters if you want. if you dont like the colors you could order blanks and have someone like gear labels print up some for you. they work great and are easy to apply.

Awesome, thanks for the info. I've just ordered few samples from apache to feel the differences myself, and I'll definitely look into your sets.

I've just got the samples, and god, I wish I haven't ordered paulsons...
By far I only compared plastic dunes, majestics and paulsons.

Plastic dunes: Shape-wise, they are pretty nice, but they have many production flaws, like plastic pieces remaining from molds, or sticker being off the center. Looking on them from the side, shows a lot discoloration that takes away from the overall feel. I honestly expected plastic colors to be much more vivid, but they turned out to be pretty dull (not as dull as majestics though). Nevertheless, for .12 each it sounds like a pretty good deal.

Majestics: Well, imho they are a total mistake. They might be clay indeed, but they definitely don't look nor feel nice. A lot of flaws, discoloration on all chips, they just hurt my eyes visually. The only passable colors are 25$/50$/1000$, all the others are extremely dull, and all darker colors have white stains all around. Imho they just feel too cheap with all those flaws. Definitely not an option I'd consider.

Then Paulsons (james bond set): I honestly fell in love. Now I know why (almost) everyone is so crazy about them -- they are just perfect, in every single aspect. Even to the last bit, edges being sharp as a knife, stacking like they we're made to be stacked. Colors are just stunning, that white, vivid orange or pink, everything just feels perfect. As for the feel, in my opinion unsurpassable by any of the other chip I saw. And the biggest tiny feature that just totally blew my mind - when you look on them from the side while stacked, they have that super tiny stripes along the whole chip, that make them look perfect (compared to both other samples where all you saw from the side was non-matching edges and color stains.

I'm still waiting for samples of some ceramics (tiki) and from CPC - I'm really curious how they compare to Paulsons.

Anything else you'd recommend trying out?

Put a little Mineral oil on the chips, this will brighten them up a bit..

My first set (other then crappy dice chips) was the Pharoahs, I loved them, they are close to casino chips look and feel.

Now I am in the process of getting a CPC custom set...If you can just get a custom...This will save time and mon...well Time..These are VERY good quality and David is awesome to work with when asking questions and through the ordering process..

Mineral oil will certainly bring out the colors, especially the darker colors. Brand new chips look rather dull.

    do not rush to conclusions...
Paulson chips are quite soft and can quickly wear out and lose marketability ... (add color transfer problem)
CPC / ASM is much tougher and will last much longer ...
but Paulson is more pleasant in the game ...
and one more thing ... over time, your tastes may change ... so I would suggest that you buy two sets (if you have money ..) :)

    ^^^^^^^definately this.

ie. a lot of people dont like the cps chips because of the raised cross hatching, but i have found the more you shufle them the better they get. i didnt like them at first either but after shuffling them for a while they have gotten much much better.

I have a set of the CC Dunes which i got off Jim at the chiproom.com (which doesnt seem to be up and running anymore), i also got a sample set of 10 IM Dunes, these had centres that where offset and also not inserted correctly in the insert in the chip, this was enough to put me off, 4 out of then 10 i had were substandard.

The CC Dunes i got off Jim were much better, no flaws as such and felt nicer than the IM Dunes, from a distance you can't really tell the difference but close up you certainly can.

Initially i was attracted to the design but i guess that's a personal thing, Paulsons were, and still are, way out of my price range. You guy over in the USA have got it pretty good, it's almost impossible to get decent chips here in the UK, the delivery charges from the US to the UK was almost as much as the chips themselves.

@MrT the shipping is a killer going across the pond. if you want great chips you might want to check out CPC (classic poker chips). they have a british office. (marlow casino chips) dont know if its the same company or sister co. but its the same people.

the way paulson prices have sky rocketed in the last 6 to 8 months it might be better just to have customs made. in some cases it would cost less that some paulson sets.

Kareth, have have custom labeled CPS and Majestics. With both of those sets, the colors become more vivid after some use. I suspect that's usually the case. I haven't tried oiling any of them.

I had some NexGen Pros. The China clays are not nearly as slick and are much nicer chips. I had professionals put in my custom labels instead of doing it myself. The Chinese are NOT professionals at this! My labels were put on by PGI, and I've not had any issues with my labels.

I've got some Paulsons, and yes, they are Cadillac chips, but I think you would be much happier long run with China clays over plastics. Of course, that's just my opinion and I might be wrong.
