Chips: 404 | | | Re: Rock The Vote I applaud Gary's idea with this thread. I can't figure out why some people are getting defensive. This is not an attack on any design. Gary is just trying to get a larger cross-section of the CT community to vote. The design competition was for CT. The poll deserves as many CT opinions as possible regardless of whether someone is in the market for chips or not. That way the winning design--no matter which design it is--better reflects the opinions of the entire community and is in better keeping with the spirit of the competition. |

I stand by my 'apology': 1. I have no intention of purchasing Sunfly 43mm Ceramics, in this group buy or at all 2. If the purpose of encouraging wider voting in the GB poll was to get a broad spectrum perspective (so that the chips appeal to a wider market) then I don't think that my vote added value to this outcome. While the design I voted for struck a chord with me (I like the Euro-Renaissance flavor), I have a strong feeling that this is not mainstream and, therefore, probably prejudicial to mass appeal. 3. I have no intention of purchasing Sunfly 43mm Ceramics, in this group buy or at all. To me, this raises an interesting philosophical question about voting in GB polls here on CT. Two schools of thought: - Only those with an interest to buy should vote - why should people with no personal stake in the outcome have a say in the selection? That would be like allowing foreigners to cast a vote in your national elections (think carefully about this for a minute - I'm sure that there's a valid perspective that a wider pool of voters could help your nation to choose a better government), or
- Let anyone on CT vote - even people not intending to buy these chips can add value to the selection process, particularly, if sponsors want to use the design commercially for follow-on sales,
Personally - I lean towards the first perspective. Hence 'sorry' for what I intuitively felt was a ineligible vote that distorted the result away from mass appeal. This occured to me immediately after I voted and I wished I could recall the vote. However, if ya wanna get really philosophical - how would new mass appeal ever take hold if individuals always voted for the status quo....
I continue to feel that I had no right to vote in this and should not have done so. Sorry.

I continue to feel that I had no right to vote in this and should not have done so. Sorry. | I go with option 2 here. I think the outcome should be taken into consideration by the sponsor of the contest. The problem (IMHO) arises when we have "newly interested parties" voting for a person/friend to "win chips" as opposed to the best design. That does a disservice to all others, Including the sponsor. As I've stated in another post, The way the current PI label contest is being conducted (by CT memebr "dicecaller") would make a fine standard for chiptalk design contests.
Just my buck fifty.
