I'm looking for information and have a question

I've noticed the "friends" function (I assume it's new?) after someone sent a request to be my friend. I consider all of the CTers I've bought and sold chips with, all the people I play poker with, the people I meet at meetups, and the people you interact with on CT to be friends.

So the information request:

Is there any site functionality other than the personal affirmation to someone else that you consider them a friend? Is there any advantage to writing each of your friends/acquaintances on CT and asking them to accept you as a CT "friend"?

And the question...

Do you plan on asking people to be your friend? How far down the list of people you're acquainted with are you going to go?

From the vBulletin Forum... it appears there is no real "functionality" yet, but maybe some will be added in future versions. This is the first shot at social networking.

It actually does nothing, you just appear on other peoples friendship lists.

Some people requested my friendship yet, and I requested some myself too.
I consider all the people "friends" I bought from or people I simple like.
No big deal.

I think the friends function could be a good way of new members to the forum having confidence in purchasing chips from someone.

If someone has alot of friends who are long term members of the CT forum then that is effectively 'vouching' for them in my mind.

I certainly wouldnt be a friend of someone who I thought wasn't a reputable member of the CT community.

I just noticed friends are displayed with a "+" behind their names in the "currently online users" list on the home site of CT.

I've asked and been asked. Am keeping it confined so far to folks that I know personally and like from from meet-ups or local games, people that I genuinely respect based on their postings here and those that I've had successful transactions with through either m2m or the classifieds.

Found something useful. If you add people as Contacts (not necessarily friends) they show up on your contacts popup and you can tell when they're online and send mass PMs. Since Friends are Contacts, they show up there too.

The PM screen still says you can only send to 5 max, but I have not tested it.

Bam! Now that IS useful. But it's for Contacts... not Friends right?

Yes, but friends are required to be contacts... at least I can't drop someone as a contact without dropping them as a friend.

FYI, I just changed the max PM recipients at a time to 15 for all Registered users. it was 5.
