Arrow Allow Classified Ad edits past 24 hours.. need protections

The software allows us to allow edits past 24 hours... really up to 2 months.

The current purpose of not allowing edits is to prevent the seller "changing" the ad on the buyers and to prevent the seller from reusing the same ad for new items.

By "changing" I mean changing quantities, item descriptions, etc. What if a buyer commits, and then the seller changes what he was selling. There's no "change log" to show what was there before.

By "reusing" the ad I mean when a seller "adds on" items to an ad that's already paid for, to get around buying a new ad. ... There's no way to prove the change happened.

I personally would like to find a way to allow edits. It's good for the seller to mark things "sold" in multiple item listings. It's good for those that run creative ads (like a tournament for chips!).

In order to allow edits, we must overcome the above problems in an automated way. We do not want to create work for mods and admins. Ideas and thoughts are welcome.

I agree that edits are a good thing, here are two suggestions.

(a) Users can't edit the descriptions, they can only add (like eBay).
(b) Users can change the complete description, but every version is logged (like a wiki-software) and available to everyone upon request. It's nice to have but not really necessary to compare two versions and retrieve a diff(erence) between them, just the availability of a verbatim copy of all versions would help to avoid disputes. Also, with a policy in place that you may not add new items to a listing it would minimize the mod work overhead, since everyone would be able to check previous versions.

I assume that both solutions require changes to the classified software from the vendor, but they shouldn't be to hard to implement.

Re: Allow Classified Ad edits past 24 hours.. need protections

I'd like to lower the price of my Nexgens. How do I go about doing that? Do I need to create a new classified?

Thanks.

Yes, you'd have to close the current ad and start a new one. Even admins cannot edit ads after 24 hours.

BTW, we didnt get much action in this discussion, leading us to believe that it's not as important to everyone we thought it was.

We are still pursuing the idea though. We'd like to let folks edit ads the WHOLE time they're open. We've requested the programmer to build in "edit history" like a wiki. That should be good enough to allow edits-at-will if he can do it.

Why can't they just post a comment stating the changes? If they are fundatmentally changing the listing then it can get reported and a mod can delete the comment.

Re: Allow Classified Ad edits past 24 hours.. need protections

Id love to see it allow edits or something of the like.. where you can edit qnty, prices, etc.... a good example is if you list your item as a set and then end up getting requests to break it up.. edit would allow you to adjust your ad to do so.. mark whats gone.. whats left.. etc.... one thought (if possible) is that if someone has an item listed and it hasnt sold within some amount of time... let them close it... give them an option where they can relist it for free with changes to the orig item.. such as qnty.. price.. etc... that may be more hassle than its worth just thinking out loud here!!!

No. Currently you'd have to use the Comments feature to tell folks what have changed. Or field PM's.
