I think it is useful. I had an experience at another forum where I had a couple of pm's that I missed for a couple of days. If pm send was used, I would have caught it eariler.

1. it is the easiest and quickest way to subscribe to the thread. Avoids the whole, 'crap I forgot to subscribe to the thread'
2. keeps the thread active for the seller. It costs the seller 100 chips to post a m2m, might as well maximize the person's value.

I think it's useful. If their PM box is full they know your interested plus it bumps the thread for the seller.

I think it's useful. It shows that there's interest in the item. If I'm wanting to buy the item, then I think "oh crap" when I see them. It's also nice to see who's buying the item when it's not me.
