All In - Movie Review

So, I'm flipping around cable, and I see the tag for "All In" a movie about a chick in Med. School who goes off and plays poker, blah blah blah.
Whatever- I start watching it.

From IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0475217/

Quote:
All In - 2006 Rating: 4.5/10 stars

As a young girl, Alicia "Ace" Anderson (Swain) had been taught the fine art and the mathematical probabilities of Texas Hold-em poker by the father she adored. But that world came to an end when her father was taken from her in a fatal auto accident. Years later, as she enters medical school, she will need to call upon the skills her father taught her as she struggles with the rigorous medical training, mounting financial pressures and the seamier side of medicine. Her friends and fellow students combine their unique talents and skills to produce a team who may well be the ultimate poker machine. But as the stakes in both the casinos and the operating room continue to rise, Ace comes to understand what her father taught her: in order to really live, you need to go all in.
Cast:
Dominique Swain ... Ace - No Name / never heard of her.
Michael Madsen ... Seal - Same dude that played Don 'The Matador' Everest on the riveting show, Tilt.
Louis Gossett Jr. ... Caps - well known actor.
Colleen Porch ... Dr. Redmond - Don't know her, but not hard on the eyes in some shots. Took a roll in Transformers.
James Russo ... Dr. Pennington - Long list of castings. Nothing stellar, but a known actor.

Let's see- how do I say this nicely.
It's a good thing I wasn't in the garage while I was watching this. Had I been out there, I would have been closer to a rusty spoon, which I would have promptly used to dig out my left eyeball.

Acting- Gross.
Poker- Seriously- A Train Wreck
Don't ask about the chips. (punk ass ABS or something for a 5M tourney which she played... oh yeah, and won... of course. Who didn't see that coming?)

The story line and script was so ridiculous at some points, it was (again, remember the rusty spoon.....) almost like I was watching Jerry Springer. I wanted to see how bad it could get. What would they do next? OMFG- I'm going to snap.

There were a few cameo appearances:
Erick Seidel
John Juanda
Mark Cuban, yeah... he's a poker player!
Amir Vahedi

IMDB users gave it 4.5 out of 10 stars.
Honest to Christ, I have no clue which movie they were watching.

Don't say I didn't warn you.

Re: All In - Movie Review

Thanks for the warning. No idiot in Hollywood has a clue how to make a poker movie, and this one sounds awful.

I think my favorite poker scene ever is from Tilt when Hellmuth and Matador are in their final hand. They show every card in great detail for a few minutes, then the players go all-in and Hellmuth starts explaining his outs to the camera "I need a Queen or Eight or you win! Awww shucks." Wow that was lame. Some script-writer somewhere decided the audience was retarded and that we needed somebody to explain how to play cards to us. Then, to top it all off, he gets Phil Hellmuth to do it. Worst of all, Phil had to agree to this. What a sellout.

I happened to catch it too last night while flipping channels. I couldn't bare to watch more than 10 minutes. Definitely one of the worst movies I've ever come accross.

I agree with everything you said, however, when Hellmuth says "I can't believe I lost to the freakin' crime lord," that was the best bit of dialogue from the entire show.

Re: All In - Movie Review

Interestingly, IMDB lists "Brenton Goulding" as one of the writers. If I remember correctly, he was the youngest of the three Gouldings playing in the main event last year (the old man was the oldest player there at 94 and got a penalty for the 'F' word one year). I believe rolandshoff mentioned playing in home games with this family.

Re: All In - Movie Review

This movie is on Showtime right now and it totally blows. The story is terrible, the dialogue is awful, and the poker is atrocious. I think they got Goulding a writing credit as a consultant so they didn't mess up things like

-4 cards of the same suit do not make a flush
-everybody has a surefire tell if you study the video long enough
-a full house beats a straight
-poker is not played out of a six-deck shoe
-casinos use hotstamped dice chips

I can't believe I forgot that line! Classic.

That's flick sounds at least ten times better than "the Big Blind". Trust me you wouldn't even waste time looking for the rusty spoon.

Re: All In - Movie Review

Hard for me to imagine ever seeing another poker movie and liking it. Rounders is one of those movies that is so good, nothing else may ever come close, and that is kind of the standard by which we rate poker movies.
