6,358 players

This years WSOP had 6,358 players.

You Wanted a Flatter Prize Pool?
You got it. The prize money for this year's World Series was spread out a bit more evenly than in the past, when the majority of the cash was concentrated in the final few places. This year's champion will take home $8,250,000, considerably less than the $12 million won last year by Jamie Gold (but still more than the $7.5 million Joe Hachem won in 2005). As you look down the list, the change in how the prize money is allocated becomes more pronounced. The players who finish 36th to 28th will win $285,678, while those who finish between 27th and 19th earn $333,490. So if you make it down to the final three tables and get eliminated, you "only" make $47,812 more. Not that nearly fifty grand is anything to sneeze at, hence the quotation marks. If you barely squeak into the money you'll double your buy in and win $20,320, which is a decent return after a long week of hard work. It's not as gaudy a number as $8.25 million, but it sure beats finishing in 622nd place. Otherwise known as the Bubble.

Re: 6,358 players

With it being televised, they don't the want the dollar numbers going down because then the popularity will go down...

Considering all the online problems, it is still amazing to round up that number.

Re: 6,358 players

It's been stated over and over, but the $10k buy-in today is a lot more "affordable" than it was in the 70s. $10k back then is somewhere in the ballpark of $50k today.

Yes, it's still a good chunk of change.

funny my friends and I actually had that discussion and we all feel that the entrance fee should increase to lower the amount of entrants. But again, the numbers of entrance and the slogan "anyone can win" is what they are after.

Re: 6,358 players

I think they should raise the buy in minimally. increasing it to 15K would not change the entrants drastically, but would increase the prize pool 30mil @ 6500 buyins...

and I think many people who will afford the 10K wouldn't balk at the 15K, whereas a 20K buyin might cause some drastic changes.

Re: 6,358 players

Just for TV.....starting stacks are 20k, that way there will be 128,000,000 in chips on final table instead of measly 64,000,000.
