Is the dealer the only one allowed to make change, or can you a player make change for another player, just like in a home game? I've always wanted to know the answer. I've never played in a casino, so I don't know how it works.
Thanks. |

But as far as how it is supposed to work: Outside of the pot, players can make change for each other ("hey, can you break this for me?"). Players often do that with their neighbors. If you can't find a nearby buddy to make the change for you, just use the oversize chip and state your intent ("raise to 300" as you throw out a yellow) and the dealer will change it for you - usually by taking the change from the pot or demanding some other player break down the chip.
Beware the "one-chip call" rule which I won't go into here but is related to all this.
Once chips are in the pot, players aren't supposed to mess with them. That home game thing of pulling your own change off of someone else's bet stack is not *supposed* to happen (but of course still does sometimes). You will especially confuse the dealer if you "combine" your ante or blind with a neighbor. E.g., antes are 75, your neighbor posts 3 greens. You post 1 black and take one of the neighbor's greens. Don't do that, it will confuse everyone. It doesn't help if you push the two together ("this 150 is both of us"). It still will cause confusion at times. Post your 100 chip and let the dealer make the change as he collects the antes. | | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
