Poker After Dark - RFID used for the first time

Poker After Dark (Shana Hiatt) is officially the first TV show to use RFID technology instead of hole cams. The playing cards are embedded with microchips. I searched for my original post here and at 2+2 but unfortunately I can't find it. I predicted this technology would replace hole cams long ago. I use RFID in my day job.

Re: Pker After Dark - RFID used for the first time

That's really cool. Are they using RFID in the chips too? That would make chipcounts and bet/pot size really really easy to determine. They wouldn't have to count anything.

Re: Pker After Dark - RFID used for the first time

I was talking to Sandy Creek about using RFID in chips and having designated staging areas for chips.

With a properly mapped out table the RFID could send a signel to a CPU which could either display amounts on LED screens on the table or a projection.

It would look like 3 main sections.

1.) Player staging - Where the players keep their chips. Anything in their area would indicate how much they have left in front of them.

2.) Bet area - Each player would have an area where their bets would be displayed and eaisly recognized. No more overages/shortages in the pot.

3.) The pot - Located in the middle of the table and it would have the size of the pot in it. VERY handy in pot limit games.

Setting the table up wouldn't be to expensive. Its really the passive RFIDs that would start to add to the costs.

I thought the chips made it to the magic nickel price point. Powerful readers are still pretty expensive but I don't know how powerful the'd have to be.

I'm somewhat familiar with RFID technology, but not an expert.

I would be somewhat worried about RFID cards because of the possibility of someone else bring in a reader. Obviously, there's some more things needed to "crack" any id codes for the cards and to communicate this, but it would be a concern.

I can't believe there's a compelling reason players would want this and more reasons to not.

As for chips, its exactly the opposite. There are compelling reasons to have it, but no reasons not to (unless you want to cheat on the chips).

Re: Poker After Dark - RFID used for the first time

how are they going to use a smuggled reader?

"Excuse me while I pass my digital wristwatch over your hand sir."

Cracking the system would be eaisier by putting a vampire tap on the ethernet cable before filming started. You could already do this with the video signal so it's not a new security issue.

Re: Poker After Dark - RFID used for the first time

Very cool! I'd heard about RFID for chips, but not for cards. That certainly makes it much more difficult to bring in a bogus card to the game. I guess there's a sensor under each player's position and as the cards pass over them, its scans and reads? Do you have an article link?

No article or link that I am aware of. I just know that they were filming at South Point (South Coast) last week - right after HSP3.

Re: Poker After Dark - RFID used for the first time

Hmmmm, how can I get a set of those RFID cards for my game???

I am sure that I can play poker with a +EV if I can know what the other player's hole is.
