Chips: 554 | | | Genius or Lunatic? Would you call an All-in Bet with 4 diamonds on the board in $10,000 dollar tourney with top pair??
I do not recall the hand play by play....I only saw the last bet on the river with the fourth diamond hitting and Phil Ivey going All-in on a total bluff. His opponent,Dia(Sp.?), took a while and called with out a diamond.
Genius or Lunatic??
It's sick that it takes a call like this beat Ivey!!
If somebody has all the details on the play by play of this hand, Please fill everybody in!
Thanks,
Drake |

I was watching that one and I don't know which was ballsier, the all in by Ivey with a Q7off (neither a diamond) or the call by his opponent with AKo (also no diamonds) who made 2 pair on the river. There board was x22 A K and Phil was first to act on each street. He bluffed at it on the turn and was called and then went all in for about 98K when that 4th diamond hit the river. I think the pot odds were slightly less than 3:1 for his opponent.

It was a stupid move on his part. You can run a strong bluff without putting in all of your chips. Second, he put his whole tournament life at stake on a bluff, early early early in the tournament!
Should the guy have called, hell no he shouldn't have! But I don't feel for Phil one bit for getting called and taken out on a move like that!
Ok I may as well add IMHO!!!

Popular opinion seems to be that Ivey will play a "modified maniac" strategy early in tournaments to either build a big stack or bust. He's a big favorite in side games at major events and I understand that he doesn't mind busting out so he can go play the cash games.
Perhaps this knowledge turned a fold into a call.

i just watched it.
the board was AK22J.
the other guy had AK (no diamonds), but the river brought the fourth diamond, and ivey's bet was offering less than 2.5:1.
if, as harrington says, you have to put the guy on 10% stone bluff, then that's it; AK's only good 10% of the time.
his opponent is okay...he was the reigning champ of the tourny.
it was a ludicrous call, and one the guy never would have made if the TD hadn't put the clock on him. he called with 2 seconds left. otherwise he would have thought it out and folded.
as for whether he put his tourny life on the line on a bluff...yeah, sure. it wasn't early, b/c they were just talking 10 minutes earlier about how close to the money they were. and how do you think guys like ivey and negreanu get to FT's with monster stacks? they don't get big hands more often than you or i. they get those stacks by making people lay down better hands (and, of course, getting max value out of medium strength hands).
but a pot like this is key, and i bet he plays one like this at this point in nearly every tourny he wins. |
