How did Phil Helmuth win 9 Bracelets?

Did anyone see Phil's temper tantrums on ESPN's coverage of Day 1?

He gets outdrawn on the river and starts calling everyone "idiots" and "bad players". Seriously, the guy goes on tilt anytime he takes a bad beat. I'm shocked that he's won so many bracelets.

i understand how he feels, but can't relate to the rant. it's just so childish.

i've heard the same version of that rant from 1000 posters and friends in the last few years. "how can i play against people that have no idea what they're doing????!!!!!!?"

Regardless of his rants, he's a good player. That's how he's won the bracelets.

I saw that last nite, too. While I agree that his tantrums are a bit off-putting and out of control, I would be a bit steamed too if a guy pushed all in with KJ and sucked out on the river to beat my dominating hand.

Phil was wrong to go off like he did, but in all honesty, at least in my opinion, the guy did make a really stupid play.

I would REALLY love to be a fly on the wall of his home to see what his family life is like. I'll bet it's 180 degrees opposite of his poker personality. How else would he have found a woman that would stay married to him for 17 years??

Heck, when I saw Robert Varconi, I thought he was a virgin. After winning the WSOP (worst player to ever win it IMO), look at wife he found!

I was waiting for someone to mention that KJ hand. So how is that scenario different from what Phil did with his AJ vs the other guy's AQ? He sucked out on the river too, but I guess in that scenario it was brilliant play because he won the hand. At least the guy he beat wasn't totally classless and start whining about how terrible Phil is, etc. and walk around for 1/2 hour crying to other players.

Even when he gets busted out at the end, he goes on complaining about how the guy only had 2 sevens. I believe that dominated Phil's hand pretty well.

Hellmuth and Unabomber are two players I cannot stand to watch and would never want to play against. Both of them need a slap for the way they act at the table. Tony G too could be added to that list. No respect at all. I always smile when one of those guys gets busted out.

From everything I have ever read of other players and personalities in poker, he's one of the nicest and most personable players in the room.
