I recently read an article in the current issue of Bluff about the possibility of some type of official poker association that would be similar to golf's PGA. Phil Hellmuth and a few other pros were quoted in the article. They want a league to form that would include health insurance for poker players and freerolls into all major tournaments. The prize money would of course come from advertising. Hellmuth states that not enough professional poker players can get the sponsorships that he, for example, can. Do you all think something like this will ever happen?
i do. without getting into an argument about whether this is a sport, i'll say this is very similar to any professional organization of individual athletes, like the tennis or gold association.
it'll take time (and probably some luck) to get things together, but they will (as long as poker on tv continues to thrive). it's just a plain old labor movement, in the end.
Marcel Luske is already putting this together. From what I gather, it was his idea several years back to do this. I think he calls it the International Poker Association or something similar.
If some sort of organization was formed and the Pros were given freerolls into major tournaments, would the average person be able to enter? What would a person have to do to become a pro inside the organization? I think it's a little rediculous, the thought of a professional gambling association.
