Poker Genie Pro power switch and volume mod

So I got my Poker Genie Pro today. Thanks Donut! This thing is cool! While playing with it I decided the alarm was too loud for my late night games and it needed a power switch.

My plan was to add 2 switches. 1 for power, and one 3 position switch that would set the volume to Off, Low, or High (as is). Off to radio shack and I get the parts.

1. SPST PC-Mountable Submini Toggle Switch

2. DPDT Center Off Submini Toggle Switch

3. 560 ohm 1/2W 5% Carbon Film Resistor pk/5

I get home and while deciding how to put everything together I realize the switch I bought for the volume control (2) is too big. Ug. I should have just put everything down and bought a new smaller switch, but thats not what happened. I decide to eliminate that switch and permenantly make the volume Low.

I desolder the piezo buzzer and hook up the 560 Ohm resistor in line with the + voltage. The thing is TOO quiet. I should really go back and get the right resistor (150 Ohm), but I don't. I take 4 of the resisters and solder them in parallel, bringing the volume up to about half of normal. Perfect.

I move the buzzer between the Ante and Big Blind displays, and glue it in place. I also glue down the mass of resistors just to be safe. I didn't think about it at the time, but moving the buzzer brought the volume down another 10%.

Ok, volume's done. On to the power switch.

I follow the power from the recepticle to a resistor, and decide to put the switch there. I desolder one side of the resistor, and run a wire from it to my switch, and then another from the switch to the board. I drill a small hole in the front housing to mount the switch into.

Wala! I have a Poker Genie Pro with a Power Switch and volume about 40% of the original.

Now its time for bed.

Excellent post, cpiaaq! Used mine for the first time last night you are correct about just how loud it is. Works great though - thanks again, Donut!

Ain't it fun being a geek?

Re: Poker Genie Pro power switch and volume mod

Excellent post. I didn't know there was no power switch. I will at the very least do this to mine (It's due Monday according to Fedex). I'll have to wait about changing the volume until I can hear it. I sometimes have games with 2 tables in different rooms, so the volume may be a good thing for me since they would be able to hear it in the other room if it's loud enough.

Re: Poker Genie Pro power switch and volume mod

Really like the toggle switch idea for the power on and off, however i need all the volume i can get out of that speaker, sometimes we just get loud having so much fun and the loud speaker helps keep us on track ! Great post keep up the good work!

Very nice!! I to would just keep the volume the way it is. But the on/off switch is a great idea!

Re: Poker Genie Pro power switch and volume mod

The on/off is nto a great idea...it is a required upgrade and should be in the original... how could they miss this?

I'm not as tech saavy as cpiaaq, so I'm thinking of just putting in one of those click-roll cord switches... I've heard they are fire hazards, but I don't plan to leave this thing on the whole time... I just want to avoid pulling the plug out everytime...

Any advice/comments?

The problem is the power cord isn't like a lamp, where 2 wires run side by side. The click-roll switch isn't going to work on this kind of cord. I guess you could add a cheap 2 wire extension cord and put a switch on that. Or plug it into a switched power strip. Better yet, plug it into a clapper!

Re: Poker Genie Pro power switch and volume mod

Was just thinking if people really think the genie is too loud and the genie lowered the volume I bet people would be complaining about the volume being too low! I for one would rather have the genie too loud then not loud enough! Maybe this calls for a poll?
