i have never heard from anyone using it, but i know some folks who have used the yourautotrim.com 3/8 foam and swear by it. this seems cheaper unless the kill you with shipping. if you get it please post your opinion.

That looks like an open cell foam, you'd do better to get a closed cell foam (volara/neoprene/poron).

Open cell foam absorbs liquid, closed cell repels it. Closed cell is preferred.

So if someone spills a drink on your table, you can soak it up through the felt without it seeping down and rotting the wood underneath the padding.

it would seem that closed cell foam would tend to be firmer than open cell foam...is this correct?

As a general rule I believe that is correct.

Some prefer the feel of open cell foam, I have a sample of the stuff you linked to in your post and its not very good stuff. You cant stack chips very high on it and its easy to push down into the wood with that foam. Id either get closed cell (volora or neoprene) or the YAT 3/8" open cell like Zerolux said. My personal preference is the open cell because I like the feel of it best but its nice to have the peace of mind with a closed cell foam.

Your pic definitely shows open-cell foam, which would absorb any spilled drinks for sure and it would be too soft. I am surprised this site would even sell such a product and suggest that it be used for poker tables. Do a search on E-bay for Volara and you will find the 1/4 or 1/8 inch thick foam that is CLOSED cell. Much better (and firmer) than open cell.

I'm actually somewhat of a foam expert. After training with plain rattan sticks for a few years I wanted to make something a bit less harmful to the face and neck. The best solution I found for this was cross linked polyethylene foam at about a 2LB density (in case anyone was wondering). It was soft enough to give but dense enough to sound a solid collision.

On topic, I concur, volara or neoprene would fit the bill the best, with Volara being cheaper but not as durable of a material as neoprene. One note on EVA/ethafoam/volara is that it will disintegrate under sharp pressure (elbows?) almost infinitely quicker than neoprene.

You can find a lot of great choices at www.mcmaster.com for foam sheets custom sized for your table. Also, on a side note you can find those removable cubes on a sheet for any boxes you want to fill and put stuff into too. You can find adhesive backed and fabric backed foam too, if that's what you require. You can even order a sample pack from this vendor.

However, before you order online, do look for a local foam and fabric shop. There's bound to be one around and you can go there to feel out the best material in person without buying anything. They've often times got scraps that might fit your needs for super cheap, and you'd be supporting a local industry which is always good.
