help with measurements.

OK so the new place I bought I move in june 1st. I want to build a table in the meantime. Im going for the hungry frog club table look (meatboys).

So the width of the dining room area is 8 feet 8 inches from floor heater on the left to the wall where the broom is near on the right. the length is plenty for a 7 1/2 to 8 foot table without protruding too far into the middle of the doorway/living room. Mainly width I want your opinion on..

I figured the space you need between wall and back of chair to walk through is about 1.5 feet. then another say 1 foot from back of chair to outside of table (belly space).....so with simple math, 8'8" - 3' - 2' = 3' 8" or 44 inches.

I would like a wide, flat rail like meatboys table, but also dont want to narrow of a playing surface. How can I maximize my playing surface but also maximize my rail width? I think 5 inches is the minimum I should go for rail width right so im left with 34 inches playing width. not bad?

here is a picture to illustrate this. Im not moved in yet so nothing is finished.

and here is the kitchen.. yes its not poker related but its my first condo purchase so Im excited haha.

Re: help with measurements.

I am partial to a 42" width, including the rail. I would also recommend a 6" rail. It gives your table a more professional look, and is very comfy to boot. Also gives you plenty of room if you want cup holders in the rail.

Re: help with measurements.

ya no cupholders lol

so if I go with 6" rail then that leave me with only 32 inch playing width.. that enough??? I mean with a 7.5 foot table wouldnt that be squished?

IMO, it's plenty of space.

Re: help with measurements.

The finished with of my table is 44", which includes 0.5" of padding on the outside of the rails making the wooden structure 43" wide. The rails are 5" of wood, or 5.5" finished (no padding on the inside edge). I love the 33"-wide playing surface: plenty of room for stacks, cards, and pots.

Re: help with measurements.

Unless you build a pretty skinny table (sub 42") imo you're going to be pretty squished.

I just went down and looked at my set up and tried to imagine trying to fit it into a 8' 8" wide space and I could never do it.

Here's a picture of my setup to try to help put it into perspective:

The table surface is 34.5 wide with a 6" rail. If you include the approx 1/2" overlap for the outside foam on the rail the table is approx. 47.5" wide. In the picture I have the chairs set up at what I think is a standard sitting distance. Set up this way the total width is about 7'. Leaving you with only 9" of space for someone to pass behind someone who was sitting.

If it was me I would design the table with 5" rails and a playing surface 30" wide. That would leave you with an actual width of about 41" and about 12" of space between the back of someone sitting and the wall. That's a tight squeeze for someone to get through but I think it could be done.

A 30" playing surface would be a little narrow but it would certainly be playable.

Good luck.

Re: help with measurements.

I got no professional opinion on the table sizing, but wanted to congratulate you on your condo. It looks awesome.

Re: help with measurements.

thanks stinky..

and again thanks for your opinions on this.. I would like to maximize my dimensions with the space given

here is another picture of the area I want to put the table.. I have a tape measure laid down to see what 8 feet is long.

Re: help with measurements.

Perhaps if you made a cardboard cut out of the table size you are thinking about it would help you decide. You could lay it across a couple of saw horses to get a better idea. In a close space like yours, I think the effort would be very worthwhile.
