Hey everyone, I have finally decided to start building my first poker table. Seeing as my shoulder is still out of commission I thouhgt I would start out by going to get all the lighter supplies before I buy the plywood. I went to Joannes today and picked up some dark burgandy velveteen and some dark navy whisper vynil for the rail. I ordered up the legs from eBay. I ordered some cupholders from a marine place for a decent price.
Now I'm just a little confused on what I need for foam to go under the playing surface in the center of the table. Do I get the green high density foam and if so what thickness do I get. Also what thickness do i use for the rails. I have tried to do some research on Scott Keens sight but just see so many different variations that I dont know which way to go with it. I know that the jigh density stuff is probably the way to go but just dont know how thick to get.
Any help/advice anyone can shed on this would be greatly appreciated.
For the table padding, I'd go with either 1/4" Volara (good choice, moderately priced) or 1/4" Neoprene (best choice, more expensive). I personally didn't like the results using Joann's foam on my table top. Also, look for a local foam supplier; their prices and selection are usually better than Joann's plus they carry single sheets for the table top (at least in volara in my area). Going with a single sheet (no seams) for the table padding is definitely a must in my opinion.
For the railing, I used 1" Lux foam and then wrapped it in 1/2" Lux foam to give it a nice rounded look. The railing came out very nice but it was little on the high side (3/4" wood + 1" foam + 1/2" foam).
The guy who runs it, Jason, is a member at Scott's Forums and has great customer service. I bought my Volara and 1 HD" Rail Foam from him and I am very happy with it. I wish I bought the suited cloth from him too.
But that is where u want to go. You shouldn't go much thicker if at all than 1/4" for the playing surface. For the rail most like at least 1". I'd recommend going with those exact figures as it is the most popular approach and what I used and have no regrets
Ok cool link, I was thinking after reading cmnova04's post I was thinking, where the hell am I gonna get neoprene? Looks like they are out of stock but the volara looks good. Thanks for the help guys!!!
I have had great luck with the padding that you get to put under "Pergo" type floring. It is only about 1/8" thick but it give just the right amount of give to pick up cards or chips.
yea a big debate is neoprene vs volara as those are the most popular choices. i don't know exactly how well the neoprene works but i've read alot on the subject. it is probably the equivalent of the blue vs white $1 chips seen here.
from what i have gathered... neoprene offers a less firm feel and the chips will "bounce" less. you can stack higher on volara i believe. both are good choices.
the only problem with frank's www.pokerfoam.info store is the shipping and handling is out of control.
The biggest issue with volara is the recovery rate; you can leave indentations in the volara that won't recover fully. Neoprene has a much higher/better recovery rate. If you go with volara, be careful with heavy objects on the table.
That said, I have volara on my table. It was cheaper than neoprene and I could get it locally (no shipping).
I went with 1/4 Neoprene and I love it. I have never played on volara so I cant compare but I would reccommend not going any higher than 1/4 inch, also the velveteen on my table is holding up great, I was skeptical at first but it shows no signs of wearing with constant usage
