Need some help guys;
I have a very standard but sturdy table that is about 4 yrs old but still is in nice shape. I'd like to replace the padding and install a custom felt. This is silly but I have NO IDEA how to remove the rail.
Can it be done or does it depend on the table?
Thanks, Ron
Typically (at least in the one's I've built or seen built), there are either some regular screws or Tee-nut bolts underneath. If you look at the pic here, close to the cupholders you'll see some screws going around the outside -- undo those and the rail pops off. In the center you see the tops to the Tee-nut bolts (I think that's what they are called) -- those are holding the center felt section. Now my tables have a racetrack and I suppose that could toss in something I'm not thinking about.
UW, Thanks for the quick reply. I'll check it out and post again. I may have to upload a pic of mine. The underside is different due to the lack of a racetrack. Thanks again.

It probably looks different because the person building it used a full sheet of plywood rather than the "left over" piece I did that doesn't extend all the way out to the edge. But like you said, post a pic or two and we'll figure it out.
I've just done the same project for my friend's table.
If your table is anything like his, there were literally thousands of staples holding the rail and "felt" down, no screws at all. It was a very time consuming project. I would suggest just start pulling out all the staples underneath. Then lift up the vinyl as there may be even more staples holding the rail down to the playing surface on the underside of the rail.
Good luck.
