Cup holders...

Can any of you experienced table builders tell me what you use to cut out the holes for cup holders?
Any advise is greatly appreciated.

Re: Cup holders...

I use a hole saw. I always use a corded drill, not a cordless.

Ditto...I use the exact same hole saw. Like tomb1 said, use a corded drill. I have blown out 4 Hitachi cordless drills using this hole saw.

Re: Cup holders...

This may be a little late, but here ya go...

I too used a hole saw for quite a few tables, and like already mentioned use a corded drill.

Another option you could use, which I have switched to, is a Jasper Circle Jig (small). If you have a router, remove the base plate and attach the jig. Using a straight cut bit in the router this jig will cut perfect circles from 1" to 7 1/2" in 1/16" increments. An awesome jig for the money!

x2 - this is what I use as well. Once you get the hang of it, it's actually a little quicker than using the hole saw. Biggest benefit, though, is that you can do numerous hole sizes in small increments (1/32" if I remember correctly). So, you cut a test hole, see if the cup holder fits, and can make ajustments accordingly. With a hole saw, you're stuck with what you bought, and cup sizes can vary slightly from manufacturer to manufacturer. Good luck with your table!

Re: Cup holders...

Just pulled mine out of the cabinet to check and it is 1/16" increments. Do you have one that does 1/32" increments? If so that is great, because like you say you can make smaller adjustments.

Re: Cup holders...

Yeah you're right Guma, got home and checked and it's 1/16" increments on the Jasper jig.

Re: Cup holders...

Yeah a router would be better, except for the setup time. Plus mine is usually fixed in the router table most of the time. I really should get a second router....
