Ok I'm about to apply foam to my rail and just want to make sure I'm doing it right before I begin. So tell me if this is the correct way...
I have my foam on the floar and my rail upside down on top of it. I am going to cut the foam out of 1 piece of hd foam 1". I plan on making the padding wide enough so that it can wrap around to the outside and inside without having to cut seperate pieces. Obviously i want to glue the foam to the top of the rail. But here is where I am confused. Do I then wrap the foam around the inside and outside AND glue it down. OR do I just glue the top down and then when I am applying the vinyl, wrap the foam that was not glued down around the rail and staple the vinyl? Its really just a question of whether the inside/outside of the rail are glued or not or if the foam just rolls over it and then you staple down the vinyl to the underside?
I'm hoping for a quick answer so I can get this thing done tonight...Thanks!
My rail did not turn out picture perfect like I was hoping. The reason for this is because I didn't do my homework. I suggest that you visit Scott Keens website before proceeding here. You may not even start with the foam tonight as there is a vast amount of info on this critical step on Keen's site. Do your homework, don't start the rail until you do, and be glad you did later.
I didn't glue the side, just used the vinyl to wrap the foam around. I got the instructions from "Junell's table" and it worked very well. Wrapping the rail was the hardest part, and there were instructions about how to make the cuts in the vinyl. You had to pull very hard and staple as you went around, and it squished the foam down to the edge. Again the instructions were very good.
I glue every thing. Anything that the foam contact wood. (include the inside and outside) If you do it is easier to the foam. Invest in a electric knife ($10) best investment for building table.
I glued both the inside and outside as well. When I stapled the vinly to the rail I pushed down the rail to compress the foam (actually had my wife step on the rail, God love her), then pull the vinly and staple. When you let go the foam expands and the vinly is stretched tight. This is the most frustrating part and you WILL have to pull some staples and re-attach if you don't want wrinkles. Very time-consuming but well worth it for a smooth, wrinkle-free, rail. Good luck!
