| Re: Playing middle trips... On the flop, I don't think that the call is too bad here. You avoid building a big pot, and you want to evaluate where you stand on the turn. The BB might have flopped a "BB special" 2 pair, and you may be ahead or behind. You make these occassional calls to get exactly what hit on the turn, and then you want to capitalize. On the flop, I can just as easily live with a fold fold here.
On the turn, raise to $2200 total. The pot is $1100 to you. The flush draws need 4 to 1 or better pot odds to call. A raise of $1000 more is enough to kill the pot odds for the flush draws, and sends the message "I have the 4, the flush draws are beat, lay them down" -- which is what you want to clearly say here. Its unlikely that someone has 77 or 22 here, because they would have been betting big to drive out the flush draws. If BB has has the BB special of 72 or 42, you'll probably see that with a re-raise on the turn, or a call and a big bet on the river regardless of what hits.
You've already analyzed correctly that you did not raise enough to drive out the flush draws. On the river, the push is just complete suicide -- the button is clearly not bluffing based on the way this hand played out, and based on the size of his raise. |
