General rules for playing poker
Some say: "General rules don't work and having them is stupid."
I guess that's what makes me a donkey since I seem to play by alot of them.
As a Rule:
I generally play AA, and I generally tend to raise with them.
I generally don't play 27.
I generally fold when four of a suit hits the board and I'm not holding one.
I generally raise on the button.
I generally like to see a flop when I have a wired pocket pair.
a couple of new one I just added:
I generally will call if three handed and the short stack is in a forced all-in situation and where as folding would leave the chip leader with a better than 2:1 chip lead over me, otherwise I fold.
so do you have any general rules for playing poker?
or do you think they are stupid?

Re: General rules for playing poker
Srsly lol. Playing "in general" is a bad idea. There are things such as player ranges, stack sizes, blind sizes, payout structures, etc etc that need to be taken into consideration.
I have one:
In general I will no longer try to help someone out who can't remember their own fking hand let alone post the blinds, stack sizes, payout structure or another specific detail about the hand. Good luck with your strategy.

I generally play AA, and I generally tend to raise with them.In satellite tournies there are times when they should be folded
I generally don't play 27.Plenty of times were any 2 will do including 27
I generally fold when four of a suit hits the board and I'm not holding one.plenty of times its correct to go after a pot with this board depending on # players, position etc
I generally raise on the button.plenty of times you should fold to
I generally like to see a flop when I have a wired pocket pair.depends on position, action, stack size, size of pair, blind level etc

There are plenty of times where plays other then your "in generals" are correct, thus always playing these in generals under any circumstance is stupid.
The point is the answer will always be it depends when speaking of in generals in poker. The proper course of action is determine from a variety of factors, and failing to recognize and consider those factors is wrong

No generalization is strictly true, not even this one.

Re: General rules for playing poker
I think we need to double check the meaning of the term "general". As a general rule, you should raise with aces. That doesn't mean it's written in stone, there are many times when it's not the best line. It's the (general) exceptions that make the (general) rule.

Re: General rules for playing poker
In general, it's generally good to play with people who generally follow the general rules of thumb and who are therefore generally predictable and generally exploitable, generally speaking.
No disrespect intended, but generalizations are not particular valuable in a game that is primarily situational. IMHO.

Re: General rules for playing poker
i'd say you're both right, but that littlebu is righter.
in the end, the conversation becomes rhetorical: what does "general rule" mean? yes, generally i raise AA. I also generally raise 27, b/c i play in several games where the 27 bounty is on. but certainly not always. not in tournaments, not in online cash games, et cetera.
anyhow, blurg.
