WWYD: Overpair

Hi guys, since taking a 'proper' job last year I have played poker casually instead of as an income and I just deposited $200 and decided to play some 25NL underrolled.

***** Hand History for Game 7072638371 *****
$25 USD NL Texas Hold'em - Tuesday, May 20, 13:58:00 ET 2008
Table Speed #1381872 (No DP) (Real Money)
Seat 1 is the button
Total number of players : 6
Seat 1: vytas007 ( $23.38 USD )
Seat 2: IHaveGutshot ( $29.96 USD )
Seat 3: davidtopstuf ( $26 USD )
Seat 4: jabbajamaal ( $26.12 USD )
Seat 5: L0ngcat ( $24.72 USD )
Seat 6: SV_81 ( $26.12 USD )
IHaveGutshot posts small blind [$0.10 USD].
davidtopstuf posts big blind [$0.25 USD].
** Dealing down cards **
Dealt to IHaveGutshot [ ]
jabbajamaal folds.
L0ngcat folds.
SV_81 folds.
vytas007 folds.
IHaveGutshot raises [$0.90 USD]
davidtopstuf calls [$0.75 USD]
** Dealing Flop ** [ ]
IHaveGutshot bets [$1.75 USD]
davidtopstuf is all-In [$25 USD]

Firstly, this is a speed table, so i didn't have much time to make my decision. Folded round, so it's SB vs BB. I haven't been at this table for very long, but I have been raising a lot. (Don't read too much into this - not many 25NL players do)

This was a tough spot, mainly because my overpair is so small and the overbet so big.

Also, the fact that the board is pretty draw limited apart from 67 and 34...This means it's generally a huge hand or a bluff.

Just wondering what you guys would do - I haven't got much invested so I can get rid of it pretty easily, but his play makes no sense. He's not getting any value out of hands that will pay him off like 8x and overpairs like mine.

Your thoughts please!

Re: WWYD: Overpair

If you haven't acted yet... Fold.

Wait for a better spot then jam it home.

Why bother with the call? Even if you are laying the best hand down here, you can afford to do it this early at the table.

Re: WWYD: Overpair

It's an easy laydown even thought my gut tells me it is a huge bluff. It's not worth the call to find out though

Re: WWYD: Overpair

I couldn't tell if this was a tourney or not, but I'm assuming its not. If he had nines beat before the flop, wouldn't he have raised? Either way, he either has an overpair and was slowplaying preflop, or he thinks you do not have enough to call a big bet with (such as two big cards). You've been raising a lot, so he could see your preflop bet as likely to be weak. As you stated, raising huge on a weak board means he is bluffing or he believes you are strong enough to call that much. I have no reason to think that he thinks you have a big enough hand to call that much, so I would believe it is a bluff. It is possible he is being deceptive, but I would certainly call.

Re: WWYD: Overpair

I'd let the hand go. I think you may have the best hand ,but you don't know anything about the player. He could have anything and it's not worth your whole stack.

Re: WWYD: Overpair

I will admit that I must be a donkey. Because I would probably call. With no other info, it looks squirlly... If he had a huge hand wouldn't he want you to call? Reading the hand develop doesn't feel right.

In a cash game, aren't you supposed to take advantage of situations where you feel you have the best of it because you can reload? In a tournament I can see a laydown but cash game I am (apparently) making a donktastic call here.

Re: WWYD: Overpair

Laydown and wait for the same situation except you have a set or the straight, then bust him.

Re: WWYD: Overpair

This is a situation where you are either way ahead or way behind, but the cost to find out is too high. Even if he just has two overcards, he's got 6 outs to beat your 9's. OTOH, he could have a monster and is trying to disguise it as a bluff steal. Pretty clear fold here and wait for a better spot to get your stack in.

Re: WWYD: Overpair

So what hands are we putting the guy on here if we fold? His play doesn't make sense for an overpair or a set. The only hand that I can put him on is TPTK maybe Tens or Jacks, and he is making a bad defensive bet. It looks like he wants to end the hand. If he has two overcards or a 67 he has 6 outs either way. If he has TPTK he has 5 outs. In all of these scenerio's we are at least 3:1 favorite.

If he had an overpair to ours why wouldn't the villan repop preflop? If he were slowplaying, the flop is not at all scary so why speed up now? It doesn't make sense.

If he has two pair or a set, we are beat but I think we are fearing the monster under the bed.

Where is my logic messed up. I would really like to fix this way of thinking if it is incorrect.

- Or - I should just stick to NL tournament and limit poker.
