How to respond to a flashed card?

Not quite a 'strategy' question per se, but just wondering what the community usually does.

1-2 NL, loose/relaxed group of players, 1 or 2 donks, most are decent. I am the BB. Small feeler bets from MP up to this point, down to 4 players. There was a Q on the turn, which the MP lead out on. My up and down baby straight hits on the river, and gives me the nuts. I'm first to act and put out a pot-sized bet (about $26). MP knucklehead pretends to 'accidentally' flash his Q at me trying to get a read.

In retrospect, I wanted to say, "show all of us your kicker and I'll tell you whether or not to call", but I was caught a bit off guard, and didn't have my book of one-liners handy.

I think this is a sleazy amateur trick, and something I would never do. I guess some folks use it as a tactic to help complete the story on someone's actions, but I just think it's tacky. Is this an etiquette breach that should be called out, or should it be taken off the cuff (perhaps with a snide remark)?

I had someone show a card seemed like every other hand I was in a pot against him at my home game a couple weeks ago. He kept doing it to try and get a read, he never did and ended up rebuying at least 4 times. He would ask if I want to see a card and I told him I will never turn down seeing one of your cards. In a ring game if someone wants to show or "accidently" shows its a non issue.
just my $.02

As far as amateur trick, I have seen it a few times on HSP. I wouldn't classify them as amateurs.

Re: How to respond to a flashed card?

As stated in ring games players are allowed to show both cards before if they want to. Not sure why they would do that. In torunaments it is "against the rules" to show cards or tell the other players what you have during a hand that is still live.

Now that you know this person uses that tactic just use it to your advantage and stack him/her. How did the hand play out?

Re: How to respond to a flashed card?

I have no problem with flashing cards to try to get a read. I do it once in a while, even in tournaments. The main question here is, was there anyone else in the hand besides you two? When I flash my cards, usually, someone has bet/gone all in, and there is noone else left to act, and I think it's a tough call. If the guy flashed his cards with people left behind him to act, then that's a major breach of etiquette, because it affects the people who are left in the hand by giving them information. For example, if the board was 345 TQ, and the guy flashes a Q and fold/call, people behind him who might have called you down with a T or another Q will most likely fold now, and their decision is based on knowledge that they shouldn't have had.

Exposing hole cards in a cash game is completely acceptable at my game.

LMAO, Joe! I needed that one!

As to the issue at hand, in my game you can show ONLY if it is heads up.

Re: How to respond to a flashed card?

In the cash game that I play in, showing a card while heads-up is accepted. Reason for it is that somebody will try to throw you off by showing a card and try to get a read from the reaction. Funny story about that is at our last meet up, there was a new player to the table and he and another regular got heads-up pre flop and with the board showing Kc 8c 10h, our regular showed the guy the Ac in his hand and the new guy folded and showed up pocket 10s!!!
Don't know what he thought be he wasn't too happy after that.

Re: How to respond to a flashed card?

In a cash game, heads up, with no more action pending, it is perfectly acceptable. Just work on expecting it and giving the "wrong" reaction...

Re: How to respond to a flashed card?

There was one player behind still to act when this guy flashed, but only in my direction. He did it in other hands as well. I should have called him on 'show one, show all'; coulda shoulda woulda.

He ended up mucking, as did the remaining player. He wasn't a complete idiot as a player, but he had a 'sleaze' vibe to him.

I had 45o in the unraised BB, flop was 239, turn Q, river 6, no flush possible.

He asked if I had it, I think I said, "what was your kicker?" and responded "then you had a chance" to whatever his response was.

I was going to stay longer, but they called me for my Omaha8 seat. I guess I should hope to see him again, and practice my "Oh, crap, please don't call" facial expression.

Thanks for the responses.
